The City of Eagan has a
Forestry Web Page
During the 1999 season, the City of Eagan
Tree Inspector personally responded to over 400
customer requests between May and August.
These requests most often concerned tree care
issues, such as planting, pruning, fertilization,
non - lethal foliar diseases (oak anthracnose, apple
scab), general landscape design, reforestation,
and tree identification.
The City Forestry Division has created a new
web page to address the issue of providing
timely tree and landscape information to the
general public, without making personal trips to
every home. In November 1999, the Forestry
website was up and running, although a couple
of sections remain to be completed. This
website will be updated seasonally and used to
inform the general public of timely information
on urban forest health and tree care issues,
natural resource management assistance, tree
and landscape ordinances, and other seasonal
tree care- related topics.
The forestry Division's website is located
at the following address:

HISTORIC HOLZ FARM
Holz Farm was acquired in 1995 by the City of Eagan in order to
erve the rich farming history of the area. This beautiful setting is located
in the southeast corner of the City alongside Holz Lake. Currently, about 8
acres are owned by the City to utilize for educational, historical and
entertaining activities. In 1996, efforts began to restore the house, barn and
outbuildings to the 1940's era. Due to the well -worn condition of the site,
there is still a long way to go.
The "Friends of the Farm" group has been formed to expedite progress
with fund-raising, restoration and programming. This non -profit group will
be the active partner with the City in regards to Holz Farm. Membership
information is available by contacting Eagan Parks and Recreation at 651 -681-
4660 (TDD 651 - 454 - 8535).
Watch for details on upcoming activities at Holz Farm. The calendar for
spring and summer includes:
Saturday, May 6, 2000 Spring Clean -up Day
It is hoped that an army of volunteers will be seen walking up the driveway
at 9:00 AM, sporting work gloves, ready to begin clean -up day at Holz Farm.
Tasks to be undertaken include: filling ruts in the driveway, raking the lawn,
light carpentry work, scraping, painting, Bearing brush, concrete work and
other delightful surprises. Cleanup day will be held rain or shine. You need
not be a member of Friends of the Farm to take part in this or any other
volunteer opportunity at the Farm. You need not call anyone to say you are
coming, we would hope that anyone who loves the Farm will lend a hand.
rday, May 13, 2000 Garden Club Plant Sale

Saturday, May 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Choose from a great sell=ction

Coming this summer .. .
Plans are under way to bring a variety of camps to Holz Farm. Topics will
revolve around farm life, fun and learning as it relates to what life was like on
the farm back in the 1940's.
These camps will take place over 1 -2 day periods half day in length. Watch
for more detailed information to be announced in the Summer edition of the
Diaeauer brochure scheduled for delivery the week of May 8h.

The City of Eagan has created a variety of ordinances that pertain specifi
to its park and recreation areas. The ordinances are intended to protect the
communities investment in the facilities, protect the natural resources and to
help create a safe, healthy, and enjoyable experience for all users. There are
several specific sections of the ordinances that are often misunderstood or
require regular clarification.
HOURS
Park and recreation areas
are open between the hours of
5:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. It is
unlawful to be in park area at
any other time unless the
council or park and recreation
director has issued a written
permit. No privately owned
vehicle may remain in a park
area after closing except by
permit. The hours of buildings
and special use areas may vary
and will typically be posted at
the site.
GOLF
Golfing is not allowed in
any park or recreation area. A
golf ball left in the grass can
easily become very dangerous
high speed projectile if it
should be picked up by a
mower. A golf ball thrown
from a mower can travel over
100 yards with enough
velocity to cause damage to
property or personal injury.
Golf also limits the amount of
safe space available to others
hoping to enjoy the facility.
Should you observe a violation of
any ordinance please contact the
Police Department immediately
and provide them as much
information as possibile.
ALCOHOL
It is unlawful to bring beer
in case lots, wine or liquor into
any park or recreation area
except when authorized by a
written permit from the
council or park and recreation
director. Beer or malt
beverages in glass bottles may
not be brought into parks area
at any time.
DOGS
To prevent unwanted
contact with other park
users, any dog brought into a
park or recreation area must
be kept on a leash not more
than 6 feet in length or
caged. For reasons of
sanitation, dogs are not
allowed in picnic areas, park
buildings or shelters.
Owners are required to clean
up after their pets whenever
they are on public property
including park and boulevard
trails. These requirements
also apply to any other
creatures kept as a pet,
including cats.
EAGAN SENIORS
Seniors - there are great opportunities for
you in Eagan! Get to know new people in
the area, visit with longtime friends, and
participate in a variety of social activities.
The year 2000 promises to bring new
activities and program ideas and hopefully
expand the fun and friendships that already
exist.
Currently, there are regular gatherings at
Oak Woods, O'Leary Manor, and the
McDonald's on the corner of Lexington and
Diffley. On the third Thursday afternoon of
each month, join us at O'Leary Manor in
their Community Room. Oak Woods'
Community Room hosts the forth Tuesday

friendly conversation, projects and plans
relating to a theme, potlucks, bingo,
entertainment and more. In addition,
McDonald's welcomes everyone on the first
an third Tuesday mornings of each month
! for the Eagan Seniors Coffee Club. There are
also activities held in the Community Room at
the Eagan Municipal Center.
A newsletter is published six times a year
and mailed at no charge to Eagan seniors. It's
filled with activity announcements, fun facts,
and upcoming items of interest. If you are
interested in receiving the newsletter, please
call the Parks and Recreation Department at
651- 681 -4660 (TDD 651 -454 -8535) and ask
to have your name added to the mailing list.

55 ALIVE / MATURE DRIVING
Join the many seniors that are rewarded for their
excellent driving skills. There are two courses; a first
time, 8 -hour course and the refresher course for those
interested in renewing their 55 Alive Certificate. The
American Association of Retired Persons has developed
a nationally recognized driver safety program for the
mature driver. Persons 50 years and older may
participate. Minnesota law allows a 10% reduction in
insurance rates for those 55 and older who successfully
complete the course.
The "first time" 8 -hour seminar provides a
thorough review of Minnesota laws and regulations for
road safety. Additionally, the aging process, as it
relates to driving skills, is discussed.
The refresher seminar is for those who need to
renew their 55 Alive Certificate. Aspects of safe driving
such as accident prevention for the mature driver and
items to think about each time you get behind the
wheel will be discussed.

Golf League Registration
This year individuals registering
for the golf leagues will also be able
to sign up for tee times at the same
time. Four' people are allowed during
one tee time, which is set for every 7
minutes. It is very important to list
those times on the registration form
in the Class Name and to have a first
and second choice.
You will only be called if you
did not get your first choice. If
you have multiple individuals who
want to participate during the
same tee time, you must turn in
those registration forms together.
Otherwise, there is no guarantee
that they will be signed up for the
same tee time.
Please understand that once you
choose your tee time, that it is highly
unlikely that you will be able to change
your tee times. If you have any
questions, please feel free to call Eagan
Parks & Recreation at (651) 681 -4660.

eagan's Fishing Program
Past, Present and Future
In 1990, the City of Eagan adopted a water quality management
plan, which was developed during the late 1980s to improve the
water quality of the city's lakes and ponds. One of the objectives of
the plan was to enhance lake related recreational opportunities such
as fishing, canoeing and swimming.
Historically, Eagan was not recognized for its
fisheries however, that has been changing throughout
the 1990s.
Realizing that winter aeration is a good tool to
prevent winterkill and provide larger numbers of
game fish, the city obtained two aerators in the late
1980's. Since 1994, the city has purchased additional
aerators and currently has nine.
Winter aeration has improved fish abundance,
but the city realized that accessibility and fishability
also needed improvement. In the late 1980s the city
had one fishing pier to provide better access.
Presently, there are four piers, one bridge, and one
platform. Weed harvesting is conducted on up to
four lakes per year to improve water quality.
Each year since 1993, fishing clinics for up to
100 kids have been conducted to teach fishing skills,
as well as practicing catch - and - release on larger game
fish such as largemouth bass, northern pipe, walleyes,
channel catfish, crappies and bluegill sunfish.
To guide future planning, the city has a goal of providing a
quality fishery within one mile of each city neighborhood by 2005.
Several steps will need to be taken to achieve this goal by 2005.
The city will purchase a portable, boat - mounted week cutter in 2000
to improve the ability to remove weeds from around piers and other
fishing areas.
For more information on Eagan's fishing lakes and fish species
found in them, the 2000 "Eagan Fishing Guide" is available free of
charge at the Municipal Center, the City Maintenance Facility and all
Holiday Station Stores. All of the lakes in the guide are located in
city or county parks.

PLAYGROUNDS
The Eagan parks system boasts some of the best playground
facilities in the State of Minnesota. Maintaining and repairing
playgrounds requires a significant commitment from the City.
Maintenance staff routinely checks all playgrounds to ensure
they provide safe pleasure for their users.
Playgrounds are reviewed periodically to determine when
they are ready for replacement. A very thoughtful process is
used to determine which equipment should be replaced based
on safety, age, ,meeting the Consumer Product Safety
Commission guidelines as well as the Americans with
Disabilities Act requirements.
Since 1998, Evergreen, Highview, River Hills and
Woodhaven parks have received replacement playgrounds. In
1999 a new playground was added to Walden Heights Park, a
newly developed park. Currently the City of Eagan has 49
playgrounds within 41 parks and 8 schools.
This year, plans will be prepared to replace two playground
structures within the City. Again, the thoughtful process will
be followed to ensure that the new equipment will meet all of
the safety guidelines while providing the most fun within the
budget limitations.
