Blackhawk Park
Nature's Critters
Animals are fascinating for the whole family. Julie
Allen, naturalist and environmental educator, will
bring some of her animals to Blackhawk Park.
Come to the park and just maybe you'll catch a
glimpse of an amphibian, invertebrates and more! If
those names don't ring a bell, Julie will tell us what
they mean, and what they look like. Bring the
family and the courage, as she may ask for
volunteer helpers with the turtle or parrot.

Child's Performance Evening
To finish the summer, take one last evening to enjoy
the spirit of the child. Watch as youth express their
talents in dance, song and other artistic acts. Smile
as you remember what it was like to be a child. And
with any luck, everyone will learn something from
them, or see something in a new light that they can
take home. Orange drink will be served.
The Evening in the Park program thanks
McDonald's of Eagan for generously providing their
orange drink on the first and last nights of shows.
Recreating together builds strong
families, the foundation of a
stronger society.

Holz Farm was acquired in 1995 by the City of
i f Eagan in order to preserve the rich farming history of
the area. This beautiful setting is located in the
southeast corner of Eagan alongside Holz Lake.
Currently, about eight acres are owned by the city to
utilize for educational, historical and entertaining
activities. In 1996, efforts began to restore the house,
barn and outbuildings to the 1940's era. Due to the
well-worn condition of the site, there is still a long way
to go.

Shooting School
agan Civic Arena
There is only one way to develop a strong shot;
practice and knowing proper technique. After
attending this session, players will know all the proper
techniques on shooting and scoring goals. After a
week of Bandit Shooting School, players can then go
to work strengthening and improving your hockey
shot.
The shooting school begins with educating players
on stick selection, stick length, proper grip, and stick
preparation. Players are progressively taught the
techniques of the wrist shot, backhand shot, snapshot,
slapshot, shooting in stride, quick release, deflections,
air deflections, screens, rebounds, breakaways, stuffs,
wraparounds, puck protection, driving to the front,
shooting in traffic, and goalie weaknesses. There will
be three to six stations operating simultaneously. This
camp will be informative and enjoyable.Class is held

Quickness Camp

Speed is a key aspect of hockey. Speed depends on
quickness, strength and technique. This is a step -by-
step program that utilizes simple concepts. The camp
will have many races, resistance races and competitive
games. Players will overtrain and skate faster than is
comfortable. With a training concept similar to weight
training, players need a day of rest; hence the Monday -

Develop your hockey and roller hockey skills in a
popular and enjoyable camp. During the camp you
will work on fundamentals such as skating, stick
handling, passing, shooting and scoring. You will
apply what you have learned and practiced with daily
games and scrimmages. Players are required to wear a
helmet, knee and elbow pads. Fee includes a Bandit

Stick Handling School
Eagan Civic Arena
Stick handling is the skill that differentiates hockey
players. The players who make moves, dekes and
plays are the ones who move to the next level.
The Stick handling school teaches stick handling
fundamentals as well as all of the new dekes, fakes and
moves that a player needs to practice on and off the
ice to become a proficient puck handler. We will
teach everybody the basics and the fancy moves. It
will then be up to each individual player to practice
and become a player that can instinctively plan and
execute moves. Class is held Monday through Friday.

Volunteer Opportunities
Quality volunteers contribute to the
success of many of Eagan Parks and
Recreation programs. Without the
volunteer assistance, programs such as
the Terror Trail, Youth Fishing Clinic,
Baseball Clinic, and the Fun Run would
not be as affordable or as entertaining as
they are. Volunteers include groups such
as scout troops or high school clubs;
individuals, including seniors and
adults; and families of all ages. Everyone
is encouraged to join the volunteer
team. With your energy and creativity

ongtime friends, and participate in a variety of social
activities. The year 2000 promises to bring new
activities and program ideas and hopefully expand the
fun and friendships that already exist.
Currently, there are regular gatherings at Oak
Woods, O'Leary Manor, and the McDonald's on the
corner of Lexington and Diffley. On the third
Thursday afternoon of each month, join us at O'Leary
Manor in their Community Room. Oak Woods'
Community Room hosts the fourth Tuesday afternoon
of each month. Activities include friendly
conversation, projects and plans relating to a theme,
potlucks, bingo, entertainment and more. In addition,
McDonald's welcomes everyone on the first and third
Tuesday mornings of each month for the Eagan
Seniors Coffee Club. There are also activities held in
the Community Room at the Eagan Municipal Center
A newsletter is published six times a year and mailed
at no charge to Eagan seniors. It's filled with activity announcements, fun facts, and upcoming
announcements. If you are interested in receiving the
newsletter, please call the Parks and Recreation
Department at 651- 681 -4660 (TDD 651 - 454 -8535)

Vote June 6
Central Park g
Community Center Funding
A special election will be held on June 6, 2000 to decide
if residents are in favor of the development of a
community central park and activities center. The
development proposal for the site would include:
• An area for community celebrations and events, such
as the Fourth of July, arts and crafts festivals and
other community celebrations;
• A central park with walking trails, a band shell, a
plaza and decorative flower garden, picnic areas and
other features;
• A community center with teen and senior centers,
meeting rooms, a banquet facility, a gymnasium, and
a variety of activity rooms..
For development to occur, a successful bond referendum
would need to be passed. The City Council has determined
to put before Eagan voters the question of whether the site
should be developed at a cost of $15.355 million.
A special issue of the "Experience Eagan" newsletter
containing detailed information about this election has
recently been delivered to every residential address within
Eagan. The newsletter provides a commonly asked
questions section, polling location and voting information,
and details about community informational meetings. The
meetings are scheduled on Tuesday, May 9, at the Eagan
Fire Administration Building and on Thursday, May 11, at
the site. The meetings will provide information about the
proposal and allow residents to ask any questions they may
have. Both meetings are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. If
The Ceti purchased 60 acres ofproperty which includes an
oak savannah, annah, rolling terrain and wetlands Citizens are
asked to vote onJune 6to determine if the site should be
developed as an active park with a site for community
fesnvals and a center forcommunityactivities.
you did not receive the special newsletter or would like
other information, a special phone line has been estab-
lished at 651- 681 -4397. Information will also be available
on the City's website at wwwcityofeagan com
Thank you in advance for taking the time to learn about
this important community issue and for marking your
calendars to vote on June 6.
