EA GAN SENIORS
Eagan seniors meet several times each month to visit with longtime friends, to welcome new seniors to the
community and to participate in social activity.
Home bases for a variety of educational or entertainment programs are the Community Room at the
Municipal Center. On the fourth Tuesday of each month seniors meet in the Community Room at Oak Woods
of Eagan. On the third Thursday of each month seniors meet, in the Community Room at O'leary Manor in
Eagan. The activity varies from Potluck lunches to bingo to guest entertainment.
The Diffley Road McDonald's restaurant hosts the Eagan Seniors Coffee Club on the first and third
Tuesday mornings of each month. This informal gathering is a great way to meet Eagan folks.
Do you want to lead a book discussion group? Plan a card group? If you are interested in sharing your
talents with others, we would love to hear from you.
Eagan Park and Recreation publishes a newsletter six times a year. It is mailed free of charge to residents
of Eagan. Call Parks and Recreation at 651 -681 -4660 (TDD 651- 454 -8535) to place your name on the

DUTCH ELM DISEASE IN EAGAN?
This year the city of Eagan is experiencing an increase in the occurrence
of Dutch elm disease. Three species of elms are native to Minnesota:
American, rock (hard), and slippery (red) elm. American elm is the most
common, but in some areas slippery and rock elm may also be present in
significant numbers. Dutch elm disease should be considered a serious
threat to our elm trees, but its spread can be managed.
THE DUTCH ELM DISEASE FUNGUS
Dutch elm disease is caused by a very aggressive fungus (Ophfostoma novo-
ulmi), which invades and grows in the water conducting vessels (xylem) of
elms. The infected elm tree responds to the presence of the fungus by
producing growths (tyloses) and gums that are designed to block the
fungus. Unfortunately, these growths and gums plug the vessels and
prevent water uptake. This causes the tree to wilt and die. The first
symptom of Dutch elm disease is the wilting of leaves on one or a few
branches in the upper canopy of the tree. Affected leaves usually turn yellow,
then brown, and fall from the tree prematurely. Sometimes the leaves dry
out very quickly, turn dull green or brown and can remain hanging on the
branches for weeks or months before falling.
ELM BARK BEETLES
The fungus is spread by the European elm bark beetle and the native elm
bark beetle (both are about 1/8 inch long). Adult elm bark beetles lay
their eggs under the bark of dead or dying elm trees. The Dutch elm
disease fungus spores grow in the beetle breeding galleries (tunnels in the
inner bark where the eggs are laid). These sticky spores will adhere to
the bodies of adult beetles before they emerge from the tree. The beetles
then fly to a live elm tree and bore into small 2-4 year old branch
crotches to feed. The germinating fungus spores enter the water
conducting vessels through the beetle feeding wounds, thus infecting
another elm tree. After maturing, the female adult beetles will seek out
dead or dying elm wood in order to breed and lay eggs, producing yet
another generation of beetles and repeating the cycle. There are
generally 2 -3 generations of bark beetles per year.
THE IMPORTANCE OF ELM WOOD IN FIREWOOD PILES
Both species of elm bark beetles require elm wood with intact bark to
survive and breed successfully. Although most homeowners properly take
care of diseased elm trees as they cut them down, they often overlook elm
wood in their firewood piles. Elm firewood is an especially good breeding
place for the bark beetles. As many as 1800 new adult beetles have been
found in a single fireplace -size log. A complete dead elm tree left to stand
could produce tens of thousands of beetles.
MANAGING DUTCH ELM DISEASE
Prevention is the best way of managing the spread of Dutch elm disease.
Preventive measures are most successful if organized on a community wide
basis with the involvement and cooperation of homeowners. Sanitation is the
most important tool in managing Dutch elm disease. Sanitation consists of
the early identification, prompt removal, and proper disposal of all dead and
dying elms. All elm wood must be properly disposed of by debarking,
chipping, buming or burying in order to guarantee the elm wood is unsuitable
for the beetles. Chipping or debarking will allow the wood to be used for
mulch and firewood.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
As a homeowner, you can help control the spread of Dutch elm disease by
checking your neighborhood for dead and dying elm trees and by checking
your woodpile for elm wood with intact bark. If you are not sure if your
woodpile contains elm wood or you suspect there are dead or dying elm trees
in you neighborhood, please contact the City of Eagan Tree Inspector, 681-
4300.
INTRODUCING THE NEW
EAGAN MEN'S CHORUS
FALL 1
The Eagan Men's Chorus proudly presented its first concert
under its new name at the June 17 fundraising event at
Cascade Bay.
1999
The chorus formerly performed under the sponsorship of
the Lockheed -Martin Corporation and its predecessor
companies. Since its first public concert in 1 983 at the
dedication of the Eagan Public Library, the chorus has presented
over 275 concerts to community, church and senior citizen
functions in addition to in -plant concerts. The chorus is a
member of the Associated Male Choruses of America
organization and has participated in numerous joint events with
other choruses from the upper midwest and Canada.
The Chorus is looking forward to its new association with
the City of Eagan and is happy to serve as goodwill ambassador
in association with the Eagan Parks and Recreation Department.
The goal of the choris is to bring the joy of music to nursing
homes, senior citizens groups, churches, city events and other
community functions.
The Eagan Men's Chorus sings a wide variety of music
including sacred, pops, show tunes, classics, spirituals and
holiday music. The chorus is directed by Mr. David Campen. He
holds a degree in music from the University of Minnesota and
