Dear Lance:
This letter concerns our structural recommendations to alter wood trusses in the
dwelling. We understand you plan to increase the size of the second level bedroom on
the left side of the dwelling. The alteration plan is to extend the left side. This plan will
require changing the roof line. The change will include removing several portions of the
roof trusses, extending the front slope of the roof by hand framing and hand framing
the back slope of the roof. The front portion of the roof trusses to their existing peak will
remain in place and the remainder will be removed for the alterations. On November
30, 2011, you requested our services to make on-site observations of the trusses and to
provide structural recommendations for the remaining truss sections.
On December 1, 2011, we made observations at the dwelling. We observed the trusses
that will be altered have a king post cord at the center bearing on the top of the
bearing wall. It is our opinion the alterations will require reinforcing the connection
plates with gussets where connecting truss cords will be removed. We recommend
gluing and screwing a thick plywood gusset on one side of each connection where
truss cords will be removed. The gussets should extend approximately 18" along each
remaining cord in the connection. Use construction grade adhesive to glue the gussets
to the remaining cord sections.

Dear Mr. Abrahamson:
This letter concerns our structural evaluation of bathroom floor trusses notched for the
installation of a shower. We understand you cut 2" deep notches in the top of 2 X 10,
Southern Yellow Pine visually graded #2 floor joists for the installation. The floor joists are
at 16" centers and have a 15' -6" clear span and an 18" cantilevered overhang. You
added supplemental reinforcement to the notched sections by gluing and nailing 2 X 8
lumber to the notched sections. On December 6, 2011, you requested our services to
evaluate the design stresses on the notched floor sections. You furnished dimensions
and a photograph of the work area.
It is our opinion notching the floor joists and adding reinforcement will meet design
loading requirements. We calculated bending stresses for design loading for a live load
of 40 pounds per square foot and 10 pounds per square foot dead load on 2 X 8 joists
spanning 15' -6" , the remaining cross-sections of the notched 2 X 10' s. The
calculated design bending stresses were slightly less than the allowable bending stress.
This is without adding the supplemental reinforcement.
