The population of the T, fin Cities
area increased 5 percent i i the past
five years with Eagan 1 'ading in
growth and Minneapolis at 1 St. Paul
continuing to lose resident accord-
ing to estimates released 7riday by
the Metropolitan Council.
Twin Citians, those living I n the sev-
en- county metro area, now number
2,086,350 -- an increase if 100,477
since 1980. That's a healthy popula-
tion growth of 1 percent a year, says
Dorothy Oatman, demogr 3pher for
the Metropolitan Council, which re-
leases annual metropolitan area pop-
ulation estimates.
"We're growing faster than i the state
as a whole and faster than most of
the rest of the rnetropolita n areas in
the north and east part of the coun-
try," said Oatinan, who pr6:pared the
estimates.
Minnesota's population grc w about 2
percent between 1980 an 1984, ac-
cording to federal statistic .
Oatinan said births and migration
into the state account for :he steady
increase. Those moving h ire proba-
bly are being drawn by he strong
economy, she said.

Independents vote
to join BBC strike
Associated Press
London, England
Journalists at Independent Televi-
sion voted Friday to join a strike
called by rival reporters at the Brit-
ish Broadcasting Corp. after the BBC
canceled a program on the Irish Re-
publican Army.
The BBC had been urged by the
government not to broadcast the
film, and there is growing concern
that the cancellation has damaged
the BBC's credibility.
Population Continued from page IA
The estimates show the loss of resi-
dents in the center cities has slowed
and population in the first -ring sub-
urbs has stabilized. Growth has been
occurring in the outer -ring communi-
ties, she said.
City planners report that the 2 per-
cent loss in Minneapolis and the 1
percent loss in St. Paul are not of
serious concern.
Eagan, the city with the largest
growth, has gained 9,410 residents
since 1980, according to the council's
figures. Eden Prairie, Plymouth, Ma-
ple Grove, Brooklyn Park and Coon
Rapids all gained more than 7,000
residents. Blaine and Apple Valley
grew by 5,000 and Burnsville by
4,666.
Eagan Mayor Bea Blomquist attri-
butes her city's growth to its location
10 miles from downtown Minneapo-
lis and St. Paul and to the improved
freeway access to Eagan.
Minneapolis Lost about 8,861 people
in the past five years, a decrease of 2
percent, the figures show. The city
now has about 362,090 residents. St.
Paul has about 267,810 residents af-
ter experiencing a 1 percent decline
of 2,420 since 1980.
"We have put together our uW est;,.
mates through 1995 and their find-
ings are not inconsistent with our
trends," said Minneapolis city de-
mographer Blake Graham. Accord-
ing to city estimates net losses will
slowly lessen in the •ext 10 years.
By 1995, Minneapolis' population is
expected to be about 346,000. De-
spite this decrease, the city expects
an increase in the number of house-
holds as members of the baby boom
generation marry, buy houses and
have children, Graham said.
The number of people in the 30- to
40- year -old age group is expected to
double from 45,000 in 1980 to more
than 100,000 in 1995, Graham said.
If many of the baby boomers stay at
expected, it will have a ;stabilizing
effect on schools, property upkeel
and the tax base, he said.
Peggy Reichert, head of the St. Pap
planning division, said St. Paul's pop
ulation loss is not surprising becausk
baby boomers are continuing to grow
up and leave home. But, overall, the
population is fairly stable.
