Auxiliary aids for disabled persons wishing to participate are available upon request at least 96 hours in advance of the event. If a notice of less than 96 hours is received, the City will attempt to provide the aids. Next Advisory Parks Commission Monday July 20, 2015 7:00 p.m. Council Chambers Eagan Parks & Recreation Department Happenings May, 2015 Strengthen Community Image and Sense of Place  Recreation Department staff assisted the Police Department with event planning for the Police’s 50th Anniversary Celebration hosted, Thursday, May 14.  Holz Farm Spring Festival is May 17 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Weather permitting, it is expected to be a very busy day at the farm.  Market Fest opens its 9th season on Wednesday, June 3 from 4 – 8 p.m. Event Partner, Think Bank is providing free shopping bags while supplies last to kick off the new season. The market is open Wednesdays 4 – 8 p.m. through Sept. 2 then after Labor Day from 3 – 7 p.m. Sept. 9 – 30.  Streets Alive community organization registration is underway. Two informational meeting dates were hosted for local community organizations to learn how to participate in the event. Over 50 community groups attended the meetings and over 120 received email and mailed invitations with the registration forms. Registration is open through July 31.  The Eagan Art House hosted Springboard for the Arts for two professional development workshops. May 2 was “Pricing Your Artwork,” and May 6 was “Marketing for Artists.” Support Economic Development  Cascade Bay’s seasonal staff is in place; 60% of the employees have previously worked at Cascade Bay. Staff will complete nearly 10 hours of training before the season begins. Promote Health and Wellness  The new fishing pier at Heine Pond is going in, it was built in the shop by park staff.  4 Pickelball courts have been painted as overlays on the Sky Hill Park tennis courts. The Adult 40+ Participants registered for the Pickleball class are provided the nets, paddles and balls.  Summer softball was able to start on time (April 20th). Sand Volleyball starts up the week of the 11th. Registration has begun for summer hockey leagues with a start date of June 9th. Fall softball packets will be going out by the beginning of June.  Cascade Bay’s Cardio Bay has expanded hours for lap swim and water walking to 8-9 pm. The Cardio Bay season will begin June 1 and the evening Cardio Bay is exclusive to Cardio Bay season pass holders. Protect Environmental Resources  The Eagan Garden Club hosts the annual Plant Sale at Holz Farm on May 9th. Local boy scouts assist guests in transporting purchases to guest’s cars.  The bi-annual tree sale was held on Saturday May 9th. Nearly 500 trees were purchased by residents.  The spraying of broadleaf weeds has started, not all parks are treated…. only at hletic sites, primary buildings and a few general areas. Dandelions, while “obnoxious” are not considered by the State to be to be “noxious” thus treatment is discretionary. The general approach in parks is to nurture thick turf to crowd out weeds.  The Resident Buckthorn program is underway. Residents having Buckthorn can arrange to have the City pickup what they remove. Arrangements are made through the Tree Inspector. Advisory Parks Commission Workshop May 18, 2015 Page 1 Facilitate Community Connections  Holz Farm Clean Up Day was held on a beautiful sunny day. Over 30 volunteers joined Friends of the Farm Board Members to spruce up the park. Volunteers from Eagan Foundation, Eagan Garden Club, Cub Scouts and many individuals from young children to seniors worked together mulching, weeding, cleaning, washing windows, and other tasks to ready the farm for the new season.  The annual Arbor Day poster event was held at the Central Maintenance Facility on Saturday May 9. The poster winner was from Woodland Elementary. Cable TV filmed the event and even interviewed the winner. Provide Recreation Experiences  Nearly 1,000 people participated in programs offered by the Eagan Art House in the first quarter of 2015. 25% of this number was through registrations for classes listed in the recreation brochure. The rest was birthday parties, groups and outreach including school art nights, artist in residence at Glacier Hills, workshops at Commons on Marice, area art exhibits and Eagan Artist Connect.  Summer programs will begin on June 8. Summer in the Park for ages 5-12 continues to be popular and will be held at 9 park locations. So far there are over 350 youth registered. Tennis lessons and programs for all ages will be happening at various tennis courts this summer as well. Registrations are being accepted while space is still available.  The Moonshine Park expansion project is out for bid as part of a Public Works package. Work is expected to begin in July with substantial completion by year end.  The expansion of the parking lot at the ECC and the addition of a trail to help accommodate Marketfest users is underway.  Cascade Bay will open for the weekend of May 30 & 31, from 11 am – 5 pm. Beginning Saturday, June 6 Cascade Bay will be open daily, from 11 am – 8 pm.  Summer Xtreme Adventures in partnership with Dakota Hills Middle School starts on June 23 and runs through July 16.  Summer Fun Xtreme Adventures at Dakota Woodlands kicks off with a summer BBQ at Black Hawk Park on June 16.  Eagan 55 plus/Seniors are looking forward to many summer activities including a Pig Roast in the Park on July 29 at Central Park.  Spring session of Preschool wraps up on May 21 with a year-end family picnic at Blackhawk Park.  Summer Preschool classes and Camps begin June 8 and run for 10 weeks. Space remains in Pirate Camp, Critters Camp, Little Scientists Camps and many others! Registration is open and ongoing, see the current issue of Discover for more information.  T-Ball begins June 8 for the 7 week summer session. Evening T-Ball classes are nearly full, however space remains in the morning classes.  Puppet Wagon rolls out June 8 for the first show of the season at 10:00a.m. at Trapp Farm Park.
