REPORT OF CONSTRUCTION OBSERVATIONS AND TESTING DART WAREHOUSE V HIGHWAY 55 & BEVERLY DRIVE EAGAN, MINNESOTA AET PROJECT No. 20-14087 INTRODUCTION Purpose The new Dart Warehouse V building was recently constructed at the intersection of Highway 55 & Beverly Drive in Eagan, Minnesota. This report summarizes the results of the observations and construction testing services we performed during construction of that structure. To protect you, American Engineering Testing, Inc. (AET), and the public, we authorize the use of this report only by you and your project team for this specific project. Contact us if other uses are intended. Scope of Services On March 25, 2016, we were authorized by Mr. Travis Bries of RJ Ryan Construction to perform observations and construction testing services for the project. The general scope of services we were authorized to perform during construction of the new Dart Warehouse V building included the following items: • Observing the soils in the bottom of the mass excavation for the building, parking lots and retaining wall no. 5. • Performing compaction testing of the building pad fill soils, parking lots and retaining wall no. 5 backfill soils. • Observing the reinforcing steel placed in formwork for the cast -in-place concrete structural elements of the structure. • Performing testing of plastic concrete during placement in structural elements of the structure. • Performing compressive strength testing of concrete test cylinders. • Observing and testing the field welded and bolted connections for the structural steel frame, steel joists and metal decks. • Presenting the results of our observations and testing in formal reports. All services provided by AET were performed on a will -call basis. AET Project No. 20-14087 - Page 2 of 7 PROJECT INFORMATION The construction recently completed includes a new Dart Warehouse V building. We further understand the structure: • Has one above -grade level. • Has a first floor elevation of 859.95. • Has approximate overall plan dimensions of 200 feet by 705 feet. • Is supported by conventional spread footings designed using an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,500 pounds per square foot (psf). • Has below -grade reinforced masonry block walls; cast -in-place concrete footings; precast concrete wall panels; a structural steel frame and a metal deck roof supported by steel joists. • Is able to tolerate normal amounts of settlement for this type of structure (up to 1 -inch total and 1/2 -inch differential). • Is designed and constructed according to applicable building code requirements. Deviations from the above design information could necessitate altering our conclusions and recommendations. Contact us if the information stated is different from the actual project design. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Prior to construction, we performed a subsurface exploration program at the referenced site. The results were presented in our Report of Geotechnical Exploration and Review, dated August 7, 2000 (AET Project No. 20-00504). It was recommended in our report that the proposed building be supported by conventional spread footings after corrective earthwork to remove topsoil, fill and poor quality alluvial clay soils down to the underlying suitable naturally deposited alluvial sands. Refer to our report for more detailed information about the soil conditions and recommendations for building support. AET Project No. 20-14087 - Page 3 of 7 SOIL OBSERVATIONS AND TESTING Excavation Observation and Results We observed the soils exposed in the bottom of the mass excavation for the building and retaining wall no. 5 between the dates of March 15 and April 13, 2016. Our services were performed on a will -call basis, coordinated with site personnel from Turner Excavating and Hardscape Construction, which allowed us to observe the entire mass excavation for the building and retaining wall no. 5. In conjunction with observing the excavations, we also performed shallow hand auger borings and hand cone penetrometer probes in the bottoms of the excavations to evaluate the strength of the soils. The soils exposed in the bottom of the mass excavation for the building were judged to be naturally deposited fine coarse alluvial sands, similar to those described by the soil borings and associated report. Our hand cone penetrometer probes indicated the soils should be capable of supporting unit stresses of up to 2,500 psf. Based on our observations, hand auger borings, hand cone penetrometer probes, and our review of the available information, we judged the naturally deposited soils to be suitable for support of the anticipated fill and structural loads: Since the bottom of the excavations terminated below the planned bottom -of -footing grades, 1:1 oversizing of the excavation bottoms and subsequent fill system was recommended. Our judgments of the excavation oversizing were based on the off -set staking and elevation staking provided for us in the field by Turner Excavating and Hardscape Construction field personnel. Based on the information provided, it appeared that the recommended lateral oversizing was provided for the observed excavations. Compaction Testing Results AET personnel performed a total of 246 compaction tests in fill and backfill placed in the building, retaining wall no. 5 and utility trench excavations. The results of these field density tests were compared to the laboratory Standard Proctor maximum dry densities (ASTM: D698) for each different soil type to calculate the compaction levels for each test. The results of our compaction tests were presented previously in Field Density Test Reports. In summary, the soils at the locations and elevations tested were compacted to the specified levels with either initial or recompaction efforts. AET Project No. 20-14087 - Page 4 of 7 In the areas where the tests indicated insufficient compaction was attained with the initial compactive effort, the soils in these areas were reworked until subsequent tests (designated "Retest") indicated the recommended compaction level had been achieved. REINFORCING STEEL OBSERVATIONS Before concrete was placed for the cast -in-place concrete structural elements of the building, personnel from AET observed the location and placement of mild reinforcing steel. Our observations were performed on a will -call basis when coordinated with the contractor. Our services included the following: • Reviewing the most current approved structural drawings present at the jobsite. • Measuring the sizes of the formwork and verifying conformance with structural drawings. • Documenting the bar sizes, the number of bars, the spacing of bars, and verifying general conformance with the approved drawings. • Documenting that adequate bar clearance was provided from forms, subgrade soils, or future concrete surfaces using chairs or other approved devices. • Documenting the presence and spacing of bolts installed in concrete. • Documenting general conformance with specified cover requirements. • Observing the general appearance of the reinforcing steel bars and formwork. We observed the reinforcing steel placed in concrete structural elements between the dates of March 29 and May 20, 2016. Based on the results of our observations, it is our opinion that the reinforcing steel we observed in-place for the observed structural elements was in substantial compliance with the most current structural drawings available at the site. We did observe some discrepancies; such as missing bars, inadequate clearance/cover of the bars, inadequate bar spacing, and missing chairs or supports. The observed discrepancies were brought to the attention of the ironworkers and RJ Ryan Construction personnel, and were immediately repaired. AET does not perform surveying services; therefore, our observations of the reinforcing steel were based on the positioning of the formwork by the contractor or subcontractor. We are not responsible for the exact locations of the formwork or the embedded items installed in the concrete. AET Project No. 20-14087 - Page 5 of 7 CONCRETE TESTING On -Site Testing of Plastic Concrete Personnel from our firm performed testing of the plastic concrete placed for the project during the period from March 29 to June 8, 2016. The sampling and testing was conducted in accordance with the procedures described by ASTM, and included the following items: • Reviewing the delivery tickets to confirm that the correct mix was delivered. • Measuring the slump of the concrete mixture. • Measuring the percentage of entrained and entrapped air within the concrete mixture. • Measuring the temperature of the concrete mixture. • Casting 6 inch by 12 inch and 4 inch by 8 inch concrete test cylinders for compressive strength testing. The results of our field testing of concrete were presented previously in our Concrete Test Reports. The test results generally indicated that the concrete delivered to the site was generally within the requirements of the project specifications for slump, air content, and temperature. Compressive Strength Testing of Concrete During concrete placements at the project site, AET technicians cast 4 inch by 8 inch or 6 inch by 12 inch concrete test cylinders. The test cylinders were temporarily stored at the jobsite and then returned to our laboratory for moist curing before compressive strength testing. The compressive strength testing was conducted in accordance with ASTM: C39. Between the dates of March 29 and June 8, 2016, a total of 40 sets of concrete test cylinders were cast and tested for concrete placed for the project. The results of the compressive strength testing were presented previously in our Concrete Test Reports. Review of our test results indicate the specified compressive strength values were met or exceeded at 28 days for all sets of test cylinders. AET Project No. 20-14087 - Page 6 of 7 OBSERVATIONS OF WELDED AND BOLTED CONNECTIONS Between the dates of April 27 and May 12, 2016, NDT technicians from AET observed the field welded and bolted connections of the steel frame, steel joists, and metal deck roof. Visual weld observations were performed in accordance with the requirements of the AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code, Section 6 (steel frame) and AWS D1.3 Structural Welding Code, Section 6 (sheet steel). Individual welds were visually observed for quality, size and length. Visual observations were also made for the puddle welds and fasteners fastening metal decking to the joists. The puddle welds were also observed for spacing, pattern, size and quality. The TEK screws were observed for the correct number and pattern, as well as sidelap fastening. Based on our observations and testing, it is our judgment that the welded connections which our technicians observed satisfied the requirements of the referenced codes and project specifications. The TEK screws fastening the sidelaps of the decking were also installed per the project plans and specifications. The high strength bolted connections were observed for compliance with Section 9a of the "Specification for Structural Joints using ASTM: A325 or ASTM: A490 Bolts" approved by the Research Council on Structural Connections. The high-strength bolted connections were observed for intimate contact of all plies and that a washer was installed behind or under the nut. If tension - controlled bolts (TCB's) were used, indicating a predetermined tension or torque, we observed that the tension indicators were fractured. Based on our observations, it was our opinion that washers were installed at all observed bolted connections, and that all plies were in intimate contact. We also observed that the tension indicators of the TCB's were fractured. Copies of our NDT Field Reports were left with field personnel at the site. STANDARD OF CARE Our services for your project have been conducted to those standards considered normal for services of this type at this time and location. Other than this, no warranty, either express or implied, is intended. AET Project No. 20-14087 - Page 7 of 7 SIGNATURES This Report was Prepared by: American Engineering Testing, Inc. .
