Sometime during late 1949 to 1950 Don worked for many months in Greenland on the Thule military airbase. Gin stayed home, saving his earnings and upon his return they started Don's DX Automotive Service Station, located on West 7th Street in St. Paul. They lived in Sibley Manor apartments across the street and started a family. Gin and Don had 3 sons; David (1954), Jeff (1956), and Patrick (1958). In 1959 they built and moved to their current home, "out in the country" in Eagan Township. In this neighborhood and throughout the Eagan community, she and Don developed many cherished friendships.
