Document - Obituary - Virginia Knight Obituary and Funeral Program information - 6/8/2010VIRGINIA KNIGHT
Virginia (Gin) Knight (O'Hearn) was born on September, 21, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa to Walter and Josephine (Becker) O'Hearn.
Her early childhood was spent in Sioux City. When she was in grade school the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where she
made many lifelong friends. She graduated in 1945 from Woodrow Wilson High School in St. Paul and attended the University
of Minnesota for a year. She worked in secretarial positions for Northwest Orient Airlines and later Sperry Rand Corporation in
St. Paul. During WWII, her brother Don O'Hearn was in the Air Force and future husband, Don Knight was in the Navy. Don
and Gin were married on May 27th, 1950, lasting 58 years until Don's death in 2008. Sometime during late 1949 to 1950 Don
worked for many months in Greenland on the Thule military airbase. Gin stayed home, saving his earnings and upon his return
they started Don's DX Automotive Service Station, located on West 7th Street in St. Paul. They lived in Sibley Manor
apartments across the street and started a family. Gin and Don had 3 sons; David (1954), Jeff (1956), and Patrick (1958). In
1959 they built and moved to their current home, "out in the country" in Eagan Township. In this neighborhood and
throughout the Eagan community, she and Don developed many cherished friendships. Gin worked as an Avon Cosmetics
Representative in the early 1960s. In 1966 she was hired as the first female and first civilian employee or ine Eagan Police
Department working as a secretary for the Eagan Chief of Police, Martin DesLauriers. The departmci It was Only one year old
and had 5 officers. As the city and police department grew, so too did her responsibilities. She was involved with the
computerization, creation of the dispatch center and implementation of the 911 system in Eagan, retiring in 1991 after 24
years of service. She thoroughly enjoyed her work and co-workers at the City of Eagan. Gin and Don loved to travel the United
States and Canada including a memorable trip to Alaska. They also enjoyed a modest cabin on the Birch Creek & Kettle River
near Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren: Melissa, Jacob, Lauren, Lindsay
and Daniel. She attended almost every major event in their lives and was a big influence and role model for them. In her
retirement years she stayed very active; volunteering countless hours at both St. Joseph's Hospital and the Eagan Historical
Society. She was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Mendota for 50 years.
She is survived by her two sons, daughters-in-law and five grandchildren: David (Pamela); their children: Melissa & Lindsay
Jeff (Sue): their children: Jacob, Lauren & Daniel
She was preceded in death by Walter and Josephine O'Hearn (parents), Don Knight (husband), Patrick Knight (son) and Don
O'Hearn (brother), Maud Knight (mother-in-law), Fred Labernik (brother-in-law) and Tom Labernik (nephew).
