In 1997, the Eagan Arts and Humanities Council and the City of Eagan partnered to provide the community’s first art center, called the Eagan Art House, at 3981 Lexington Avenue. The 1950’s rambler, previously owned by the McCarthy family, provided space for art classes and small arts gatherings. The house soon became home to Dakota Center for the Arts, a local non-profit looking for space for their already robust visual arts program. Dakota Center for the Arts and the Eagan Arts and Humanities Council merged their organizations in 1999, and continued as Dakota Center for the Arts. That same year, the garage of the house was converted into a full pottery studio. In January 2007, operations were turned over to the City of Eagan Parks and Recreation Department. Dakota Center for the Arts remained active to fully operate the Eagan Art Festival, now in its 23rd year. The pottery studio was expanded in 2011 to accommodate greater access and room for additional equipment. Today, the Eagan Art House reaches over 5,000 people annually through classes, special events, exhibits and outreach. 2017 will be filled with exciting celebration activities including: Join this creative group of local artists to share experiences, resources and opportunities. Classes with 1-2 skaters will receive a 15 minute private/semi-private lesson with the remainder practice time. For questions regarding what level to sign up for, please contact the Skating School Coordinator at (651) 675-5453. If you are new to the program, place your skater in a lower level than you think, as each skater is evaluated the first day of lessons. Beginner 1-4 Ages 3-6Age 6 and under should sign up for Beginner Level 1 unless they have passed into a higher level class. Beginner 7+ Skaters age 7 and up with no skating experience. Pre-Alpha Beginning skater ages 7 and up who can skate comfortably forwards unassisted or skaters that have passed the Beginner Level 4 class. Alpha Skaters who have passed Pre-Alpha level or who have mastered the skill of a one foot glide on each foot and are comfortable moving backwards. Beta Skaters who have passed Alpha level or who have mastered the skill of forward crossovers in both directions and can stop. Gamma Skaters who have passed Beta level or have mastered the skill of backward crossovers in both directions and can do t-stops. Delta Skaters who have passed Gamma level or have mastered the skill of forward outside three turns on each foot and the 7 step mohawk combination. Freestyle Full ice is used for this class. Skaters are grouped according to their ISI Freestyle level. Each ISI Freestyle level has required elements that must be mastered and then skated to music. Adult Adult classes are divided according to ability and needs. Adult & Child Pair Ages 3-7Designed for the adult and the beginner child to learn to skate. This class will focus on the skating basics for the child. Adult must have some skating experience. Hockey Skills Helmet, shin pads and elbow pads are mandatory. Full hockey gear is suggested. Sticks and pucks are not used. The focus is on skating skills, speed and edge control. Skaters must have passed Beginner Level 3 to be eligible for this class. Participants MUST be able to skate on their own and have knowledge of gliding and stopping. • Hockey Skills 1 & 2: Skaters must have passed Beginner Level 3.• Hockey Skills 3 & 4: Skaters must have passed Alpha or Hockey Skills Level 2. • Hockey Skills 5: Skaters must have passed Beta or Hockey Skills Level 4. Intro to Privates Ages 3+ Lessons include a 15 minute private lesson and practice time without a coach. This class is designed for a skater who is trying to get an extra push to pass a level or master a skill. Family DiscountThe first two family members living at the same address pay full price; each additional family member living at the same address pays half price. The discount applies to only one class fee if the additional family member is taking multiple classes. Refunds, Cancellations and Make-up PolicyNo refunds are issued after classes begin. There are no make-up lessons. Figure Skates Proper equipment is the first step towards a positive skating experience. Skates should be leather and properly fit. Properly lace skates from the toe area to the top of the ankle. Hockey Skates Please no hockey skates for those enrolled in Beginner 5 and under. The motor skills of youngsters age 5 and under are not developed enough to reach “Maximum Rate of Learning” in hockey skates. Notice that a hockey blade is “rocked” (like a rocking chair). If the skater does not have complete balance, (which most 3-5 year olds do not) they will rock forward or backward and fall down frequently. Often times this causes discouragement, and it is more likely that they may quit because of equipment making the learning process more difficult. Skating Attire We strongly suggest snowpants, helmets and gloves/ mittens; especially for skaters ages 6 & under. During the Lesson • Everyone on the ice must be in skates; no shoes or boots are permitted. • Lesson participants should be the only ones on the ice. • Parents/family/friends are not allowed in the hockey box area during classes. • If you have any questions/concerns for your child’s instructor, please call (651) 675-5589 and leave a message with the Civic Arena staff. Recommendations for Beginning Skaters Quality skates are available to rent at the arena for $2/pair. 11 Eagan Parks & Recreation • (651) 675-5500 • www.cityofeagan.com March/April/May Registration Begins January 17 • www.cityofeagan.com/register F o r E v e r y o n e Monday, February 27 - April 3 Time 6:15 - 6:45 p.m. Cost $66/skater Beginner 1 #35152001-M3 Beginner 2 #35152002-M3 Beginner 3 #35152003-M3 Beginner 4 #35152004-M2 Beginner 7 & Up #35153005-M2 Hockey Skills 1 & 2 #35153025-M2 Lessons include open skate punch card for each participant. Eagan Parks & Recreation preschool program’s focus is on the social development of children ages two through five years old. Participants will benefit by developing their social skills through play, art, projects, stories, songs, games, and outside play. Participants will also have the opportunity to develop their independence, self-help and sharing skills and learn to follow directions. Eagan Parks & Recreation uses the following guide lines to define who is a preschooler for participation in our programs: • Children who are the appropriate age on or before the first day of class. • Children who are completely toilet trained and independent in the bathroom. • Children are required to wear underwear; pull-up type diapers are not allowed. • Toilet training is not required for children registered in parent/child classes. • Bright Beginnings and Let’s Play! Music Together classes are for children who are the age stated in the class and accompanied by an adult. Additional siblings are welcome, when age appropriate and additional fees paid as listed in the program. • Just for 5’s (and some 4’s, too!) class is for children who are the appropriate age to enter kindergarten in the Fall of 2017. Please note: Due to the popularity of our preschool program, classes tend to fill up quickly. Wait lists will be maintained in a manner that accommodates participants new to the program. Participants enrolled in more than one preschool class per session may experience programming duplication between classes. photo by Amy Brosam P r e s c h o o l Time Payments Schedule and Scholarship Information Installment payments for the school year are available for Fun with 3’s, Preschool in the Park, Just for 5’s, Wacky Wednesdays, and Friday Friends. There were book clubs, quilting, nimble fingers, Wednesday discussion groups, card games, potlucks, bingo and movie matinees to name a few. I attended a dinner theater, ice cream social, Senior Expo . . . and the list goes on. There were many fun festivities and I made a lot of friends. I know that this year as well will be filled with new programs and some great changes. As you can see, this issue of the News From the Front Porch is now part of the Eagan Parks & Recreation Events & Activities Catalog that goes out to over 28,000 residents of Eagan. For you new readers, this publication was only mailed to 55 plus/Senior members of the Eagan Seniors. Welcome new readers! One of the new offerings that started in January was: Food for your Brain, a class to help with brain fitness. Part 2 of this class will be starting this month. Exciting upcoming trips are to the Federal Reserve Bank and Psycho Suze’s for lunch, FlyOver America at the Mall of America and the annual Dinner Theater Event, “Elvis has Left the House”. If you have a suggestion for a future fun activities write it down and put it in the suggestion box that is located in the Lone Oak Room. I find that the Lone Oak Room is the place to be if you’re 55 years or older. It is a hub of fun activities - bingo, health and wellness classes, Netflix choice programs, card games, book clubs, needlework groups - to name a few of the varieties of daily activities offered. Please consult the Front Porch to get details about all of the activities, classes and programs offered at other locations throughout the City of Eagan as well. There are also many ways to get involved - as a regular volunteer, as a room host or just a one time commitment for a special event. Volunteers are always needed. I hope you find this publication with its many programs, events and activities rich with options to enhance your quality of life and facilitate many new friendships. Eagan Senior Board (ESB) Update The ESB is a nine member board that partners with the City of Eagan Parks and Recreation to assist in the development, coordination and sponsorship of programs, events, activities that benefit 55 plus/Seniors. Now they’ve become common and, in some cases, quite bothersome. These large birds roam as they wish during the day and roost very high in trees each evening. They grow to as much as twenty-five pounds. This is likely because they eat anything they can catch. We know they eat berries, grains, ferns, and what they steal from nearby bird feeders. But they will also eat insects, frogs, and even snakes. People joke about shooting one for their Thanksgiving or Christmas feast. Of course, city ordinances prohibit hunting within city limits. It would probably not be such a good idea to eat one of these creatures anyway, considering their diets. What is the Eagan Senior Board and 55 plus/Seniors Membership? For all of you new readers of this publication, this article is an explanation of the 55 plus/Senior membership and The Eagan Senior Board. The Eagan 55 plus/Seniors is a separate organization that works in partnership with the City of Eagan and community stakeholders. It is overseen by the Eagan Senior Board (ESB) which is a 9 member board that provides programming and communication for 55 plus/ Seniors as well as promotes recreational, social, educational and service opportunities. With specific objectives to: • Promote the interests of the 55+ population of Eagan and adapt to and their changing needs. • Maintain fiduciary responsibility over the collection, maintenance, and allocation of funds used for the purpose of fostering ESB activities. • Maintain partnership with the City of Eagan. The ESB collects $10 per year for their membership which entitles members to participate in daily activities in the Lone Oak Room of the Eagan Community Center such as cards, games, clubs; be on the Eagan Senior Board and participate in the member only events such as the Pizza Party, Volunteer Gala and Holiday Luncheon. Membership is voluntary and 100% of the membership dollars goes to sustain the daily programs and offset costs of events. An example of daily programs costs; yearly Lone Oak Room supplies of coffee, tea, cups etc. is around $1,800 per year. A City of Eagan Recreation Supervisor is the liaison to the ESB and works in partnership to create, promote and implement programs for 55+Seniors within the Lone Oak Room and in the City of Eagan. You do not have to be a member of the Eagan 55 plus/Seniors to register for many of the classes, events and programs offered to older adults. The calendars in this brochure have a symbol after the listing that indicates if you need to be a member to attend a specific activity. For example, Mahjong, Bingo, Book Clubs all have a symbol that indicates you must be a member to attend that activity. Those activities are supported and maintained by the ESB. If you need additional information, please contact Loudi Rivamonte, Recreation Supervisor at lrivamonte@cityofeagan.com or (651) 675-5515. Additionally, other programs and activities are co-sponsored with the City of Eagan Parks & Recreation to offset costs of events. What privileges do I receive for being a member? Your member designation entitles you to participate in daily activities in the Lone Oak Room such as cards, games and clubs; be on the Eagan Senior Board, and participate in any member-only activities like the Members Only Ice Cream Social, Pizza Party and Holiday Luncheon. How do I sign up? Simply complete the form below and return it with $10/person to the Eagan Seniors via mail (Eagan Seniors, 3830 Pilot Knob Road, Eagan, MN 55122) or to the front counters of City Hall or Eagan Community Center. Your membership name tag will then be available for you in the Lone Oak Room. 2017 NAME: PHONE: Book Clubs Cards/Games Crafts Educational Health & Fitness Socials Trips Other NO CASH Initials Received By: CHECK (payable to The City of Eagan)#ECC CREDIT CARD Parks & Rec Date Received: Annual Membership Form January - December 2017 $10/person In order to protect credit information, please use our online registration (RecTrac) or call Eagan Parks & Recreation at (651) 675-5500.
