Document - Historical Society Minutes - Minutes - 6/3/2002HISTORICAL COMMITTEE JUNE 3, 2002 A meeting of the Historical Committee was held on Monday, June 3, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. Those present were Ray Wade, Gin Knight, Mary Ellen Vorachek, Helen Kennedy, Alice Bolke, Dan Kahnke and Wayne Schwanz and Communications Coordinator Joanna Foote. SORTING SESSIONS David Schrier and Rebecca Snyder are working on the book nearly full-time. Rebecca Snyder has gotten several photos from the Eagan Historical Society. She is looking for an aerial photo showing I-35E, but has not been able to locate one in our files. Rebecca Snyder has given the Historical Committee a good start on sorting and an Index. Ray Wade will be here every Monday sorting. OPEN HOUSES June 9 1:00-3:00 p.m. Helen and Ray July 14 1:00-3:00 p.m. Wayne and Gin (aerial photos/environmental, storms) August 11 1:00-3:00 p.m. Ray and Dan September 8 1:00-3:00 p.m. Alice and ____ Joanna Foote will check to see whether office hours are posted on the cable channel. Denise Muccio Grout and Kim Hazel cleaned the Old Town Hall on Wednesday, May 1. Joanna has asked Paul Graham to tape down the door sill so no one trips, until the door and door jam can be repaired. Ray Wade updated the Committee on a presentation he gave to a Girl Scout Troop, which toured the Old Town Hall. Girl Scout Leader Denise Muccio Grout and Ray Wade correlated Eagan history with the American Girl Dolls and made a timeline, which Kim Hazel will place on display at the Old Town Hall. RAISING AWARENESS OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY WITH COMMUNITY Wayne Schwanz discussed raising awareness of the Historical Society in the community. Several ideas were discussed among Committee members, along with what makes a good display: • Displays – come up with a theme for a year and brainstorm each quarter • Open Houses next May-September. Schedule well in advance and possibly create themes for each Open House. • Get into character, period costumes. • Involvement by Middle and High Schools in Eagan in helping to create displays, information, etc. Historical Committee June 3, 2002/2 • Dedicate a window to an “era” – ’85-’88 “Eagan’s boom era” • Articles in local newspapers and City Newsletters relating to each time period • Window on roads. • Display on “What could have been here” i.e. Eagandale, Race Track, 35E through Blackhawk Lake, etc. Ray Wade has asked neighbors to pool photos of Cedar Grove area through the 1960’s. It was decided to call Erin Johnson at “Thisweek News” regarding photo of Old Town Hall at an Open House. Wayne Schwanz has “blue line” aerials of Eagan ¼ sections. There was further discussion of photos. Mary Ellen Vorachek stated she would try to bring in aerial photos again. Dan Kahnke also stated he knows a man who sells some classic photos, one of the Mendota Bridge. Wayne Schwanz stated the Maintenance Facility has a large number of photos of storms throughout the years. He further stated the Public Works Department does a great deal of work with the GIS system and that residents are very interested in this and an application might be used relating to plotting historical data that could be displayed to the public. There was discussion regarding history books, Fire Department, a display on “what could have been here” and having fans in the Old Town Hall for the summer months. It was decided for the July 1st agenda, the Committee would get together to compile a display for the July 14. Ray Wade made a motion that the Historical Society purchase a dictionary for use by the Spelling Bee Committee, the book can later be donated back to the Historical Society when no longer needed. Mary Ellen Vorachek seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Helen Kennedy made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 6, 2002 History Committee, Alice Bolke seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. NEXT MEETING The next Historical Committee meeting is set for Monday, July 1, 2002 at 3:30 p.m.
