EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
APRIL 12, 2005
A meeting of the Historical Committee was held on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. in
the Eagan Room of the Eagan City Hall. Members present were: Ted Wachter, Ray Wade, Mary
Ellen Voracek, Bob and Mimi Cerny, Alyce Bolke, Kim Hazel and Karen Ryan. Also present
was Communications Coordinator Foote.
AGENDA ADOPTION
The agenda was approved by acclamation with the addition of several items.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mary Ellen Voracek made a motion to approve the minutes of the March 1, 2005 regular
meeting of the Eagan Historical Society. Alyce Bolke seconded the motion. All members voted in
favor.
KAREN RYAN – INTERSTATE PARTNERS
LAKE RENAMING
Karen Ryan of Interstate Partners was present. Ms. Ryan stated they were interested in
naming the lake near the Grand Oaks Business Park and suggested naming the lake Polzine Lake,
after Eagan’s first Mayor, Herb Polzine or Anna Lake after Polzine’s Mother-in-law. The
Committee discussed the historic value of the names as the Polzines owned the farm property near
the lake. They further suggested holding a “naming ceremony” when the official naming of the lake
takes place.
Ray Wade made a motion to recommend to the City Council that the lake be named Polzine
Lake; Kim Hazel seconded the motion. All members voted in favor of the name.
LETTERS TO SCHOOLS
Joanna Foote introduced the item stating the Gin Knight drafted a letter to the schools and
those letters are being mailed to the principals asking for feedback regarding the playing cards from
the History Committee.
GRANDFATHER TREE
HISTORIC TREE NOMINATION
Joanna Foote stated that Gregg Hove, Eagan’s Forrester, has applied for a historic tree
nomination through the American Historic Tree Foundation, which is a national registry. Joanna
stated the original Lone Oak Tree had been on this registry and Gregg is hoping to continue with the

Grandfather Tree. Joanna also noted that a Grandfather Tree Celebration had been in the works,
however, due to a lack of planning time, it was decided to hold the celebration next year instead.
also noted that Kay Gustafson has written a children’s book entitled “Aunt Gussie and the
Grandfather Tree” and stated she will purchase a copy of the book for the Historical Society.
REALTOR FORUM
JUNE 22, 2005 11:00 A.M. – CARD SALES
Joanna Foote noted the Realtor Forum will take place at the Municipal Center on June 22,
2005 and suggested selling the decks of cards at the forum. Joanna stated there are also new
resident guides and a DVD for new residents. She will bring the DVD to play at the next meeting.
Mimi Cerny volunteered to sell cards at the forum, others indicated that they would check schedules
to see if they would be available to help.
NORTHERN LIGHTS AWARD APPLICATION FOR HISTORY ON DECK
Joanna Foote stated an application to the Northern Light Awards Competition, which is
sponsored by the Minnesota Association of Government Communicators (MAGC), has been
submitted for the History on Deck cards and read the letter that was submitted with the application.
She also stated 3-CNA is another award the City is pursuing relative to the cards.
HISTORIC PHOTO COLLECTION EVENT WITH SENIOR CENTER
Joanna Foote discussed an event to have people bring historic photos to us in conjunction
with the Senior Program.
The Committee discussed the preservation of old photos and historic wood to create displays. Ray
Wade has made some contacts regarding display possibilities for the historic wood and will update
group as information is attained.
RAY’S PUBLICATION TO SHARE
Ray Wade brought in a publication entitled “Old News” which is a newspaper of old events
that were never published. He stated a one year’s subscription is $17.00 for 9 issues.
Mimi Cerny made a motion to purchase the “Old News” subscription for a one year trial;
Bob Cerny seconded the motion. All members voted in favor.
THANK YOU ~ PHOTO
Ray Wade suggested that the Committee thank the man who photographed the water tower.
Mary Ellen Voracek made a motion to write a thank you note to Ken Morrison who had
taken the photo of the Cedar Grove Water Tower; Alyce Bolke seconded the motion. All members
voted in favor.

POLICE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE
Joanna Foote noted that the Eagan Police Department Open House 40 Year Anniversary is
scheduled for Thursday, May 19, 2005 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

ADJOURNMENT
Ray Wade made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 4:50 p.m. Mary Ellen Voracek,
seconded the motion. All members voted in favor.
