Document - Historical Society Minutes - Eagan HIstorical Society Minutes 03062007 - 3/6/2007 MINUTES EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY March 6, 2007 A regular meeting of the Eagan Historical Committee was held on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. in the Eagan Room at Eagan City Hall. Members present were: Ted Wachter, Jean Funk, Alyce Bolke, Kim Hazel, Gin Knight, Mary Ellen Voracek, Millie Gignac, Ray Wade and Linda Bendt. Also present was Communication Coordinator Foote. AGENDA Upon motion by Wade; seconded by Gignac, the agenda was approved as presented. All members voted in favor. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Wade made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 6, 2007 Eagan Historical Society meeting as presented. Gignac seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. UPDATE ON INTERN PROJECTS Consider Intern request to meet Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. – Foote stated Intern Alicia Seewald has been working Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. and will continue to work on a volunteer basis through May, 2007. The Committee agreed to meet with Seewald on Tuesday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m., in addition to the regular April 3rd meeting, to discuss the mission statement and the collections policy. FLAG DAY CELEBRATION Foote introduced the item. Wade stated he has various U.S. flags which have been printed from various Web sites. Background was given on the U.S. flag – the flag contains 13 stripes, but when Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner, there were 15 stars and 15 stripes. Later, by law it was determined there would always remain 13 stripes and one star for each state. Suggestions were made for the Flag Day Celebration event.  Patriotic band – free  Story-time relating to the flag  Puppet show  Color Guard  Speakers regarding flags  Flag coloring contest  Scout badge – Scout Color Guard  Reserve Lone Oak Room Funk made a motion to proceed ahead with the Flag Day Celebration event and continue to research the proposed suggestions for consideration to include in the event; Hazel seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Historical Committee March 6, 2007/2 CONSIDER A HOLZ FARM NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATION Foote introduced the item noting the letter from the Minnesota Historical Society informing the City that the Holz Family Farmstead at 4665 Manor Drive, Eagan will be considered, along with three others, by the State Review Board for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Foote stated the State Review Board will meet on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the Minnesota Historical Society History Center in St. Paul. She stated the informational presentation on program activities will be 6:45 p.m. and the nominations will be presented at 7:00 p.m. The Friends of the Farm and Parks staff from the City of Eagan will be in attendance. Wachter noted the uniqueness and the preservation of the Holz Farm. Voracek made a motion to support the Holz Farm National Historic Nomination; Bendt seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. CONSIDER HOLZ FARM PROJECT Foote stated there are three Holz Farm events scheduled; 1.) May 5 – Clean Up Day; 2.) May 20 – The Spring Festival; and 3.) September 29 & 30 – Lone Oak Days. The Committee discussed having a display from the Historical Society at the Spring Festival and Lone Oak Days. REALTOR’S FORUM Foote noted the Realtor’s Forum which will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2007, in the Eagan City Council Chambers from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and, noted in the past, the Committee sold the History on Deck playing cards, the video – “Eagan, a great place to call home” and the Lone Oak Years Book in the lobby. Bendt volunteered to sell merchandise from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Hazel and Bolke also indicated that they would likely be available. OTHER BUSINESS The Committee asked Foote to explore the possibility of the Committee purchasing a desktop printer/scanner/fax machine for reproducing articles while working in the basement. Foote stated Carlene Grone called looking to donate a baby cradle. Foote stated the history of the cradle is as follows; built in 1888 by Frederick Mittelstadt, a Wisconsin lumberjack, for his son, Edward; and the cradle was used for at least 8 children and 7 grandchildren and was given to her from an Eagan couple. NEXT HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING The next Special meeting of the Historical Society will be March 20 at 3:30 p.m. and the next regular meeting of the Eagan Historical Society will be Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at 3:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT Upon motion by Knight , second by Voracek, the meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
