A regular meeting of the Eagan Historical Committee was held on Tuesday, September 4,
2007 at 3:30 p.m. in the Eagan Room at Eagan City Hall. Members present were: Ted Wachter,
Martin DesLauriers, Millie Gagnac, Kim Hazel, Gin Knight, Mary Ellen Voracek, Nancy
Ingerson and Mike Scott. Also present was Communication Coordinator Foote.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes of the August 7, 2007 Eagan Historical Society meeting were approved as read
with unanimous consent by all members.
1914 TOWN HALL OPEN HOUSE
The Committee discussed the 1914 Town Hall open houses which are scheduled for
Thursday, October 4, 2007 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 7, 2007 from 11:00 to 1:00
p.m. Knight volunteered to bring refreshments to the open houses; Foote agreed to bring cups.
Foote passed out copies of the most recent Eagan newsletter which will arrive shortly at Eagan
households. She noted an article regarding the 1914 Town Hall open houses. The Committee set
Tuesday, September 18, at 2:00 for a work session in preparation of the open house.
INFORMATION ON SCOTT’S GENERAL STORE AT NICOLS
Foote noted that she had been mailed a packet of information/news clippings regarding
Scott’s General Store at Nicols, from Mr. _____ Kennelly. Knight will include clippings and
information from Mr. Kennelly in the Scott file and will send a thank you to Mr. Kennelly on behalf
of the Committee. Chief Mike Scott indicated that he would also like a copy of the information as
he is also a descendant of the owner of Scott’s General store and has an informational file he would
like to add this information to as well. Knight will make copies for both purposes.
Foote stated she was at the Heritage Village at the State Fair and found an artist that draws old train
stations and he had a drawing of the old Nicols Station.
Knight made a motion and to purchase the picture of the old Nicols Station for a fee of
$25.00; DesLauriers seconded the motion. All members voted in favor.
REVIEW DISPLAYS ON FIRST FLOOR
Foote stated there are three new displays on the first floor of City Hall; Trinity Lone Oak
Church and the Lone Oak Tree, the Fire Department and a display of Daniel Olson, who is the
soldier and Eagan native that was killed in Iraq this year.
OTHER BUSINESS
Historical Committee
September 4, 2007/2
Voracek noted having heard a message on the radio regarding the availability of money from
the State for the 150th anniversary celebration of the State of Minnesota. Foote noted that she had
some information about these grants which she would bring to a subsequent meeting. Voracek
further asked about a list of Civil War people from Eagan. She noted that in a publication by the
Dakota County Historical Society, approximately September of 1997, there was a compilation of
names from Dakota County listed by community who were in the Civil War. She thought this might
be useful if the group focused on the Civil war at a future Flag Day event which is an idea that has
been previously discussed.
The Committee also discussed sharing members’ phone numbers and email addresses. Foote
noted that this information was not considered “public” and she could not, therefore give out the
information without each members’ consent. The Committee members present were in agreement to
share their phone numbers and email addresses with the membership.
The Committee also discussed an old barn near Lexington and Diffley Avenue. Foote stated
the original site of the barn was the stop for the stagecoach.
Foote noted that Ray Wad had contacted her about a building near Nicols and Cedar Grove
Parkway (former Old Beau d’Rue Road) that he said when he and his wife were courting they would
go for walks up the hill for a beverage. He recalled a mural on the inside wall of the building and
wondered if the Committee could get a photo of the mural if the building still stands. He believed
this building is now owned by the City of Eagan. DesLauriers and Scott discussed the building
which Wade was likely referencing and determined it was likely “Club 13” which later became
“Harold’s Store.” They stated that this building had burned to the ground on New Years Eve, 1990.
NEXT HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Eagan Historical Society will be held on Tuesday, October 2,
2007 at 3:30 p.m. in the Eagan Room with a work session scheduled for September 18.
ADJOURNMENT
The Committee, by a unanimous vote, adjourned the meeting.
