Document - Historical Society Minutes - Eagan Historical Society Minutes 04012008 - 4/1/2008 MINUTES EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2008 3:30 p.m. – EAGAN ROOM A regular meeting of the Eagan Historical Committee was held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in the Eagan Room at Eagan City Hall. Members present were: Ted Wachter, Kim Hazel, Millie Gignac, Ray Wade, Alyce Bolke, Mary Ellen Voracek and Carolyn Krech. Also present was Communication Coordinator Foote. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Miller Gignac noted her last name was spelled incorrectly in the meeting minutes of March 4, 2008. The minutes of the March 4, 2008 Eagan Historical Society meeting were approved as amended. TOWN HALL SIGN DEDICATION & OPEN HOUSE ACTIVITIES – JUNE 1 Foote introduced the item and, after Committee discussion, it was noted the Open House will be held on June 1, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with the sign dedication at noon. The Committee decided to offer lemonade and cookies as refreshment at the Open House. The Committee further agreed to skip the June 3 History Committee meeting. MN 150 CELEBRATION PARTICIPATION DISCUSSION Foote stated the event on the Capitol Mall will be held on May 17th and 18th and further stated the cost is $250 for a table to be used as an informational booth only; no sales. It was recommended to Foote to have an interactive activity which would give exposure to the Eagan Historical Society. Following discussion, the group determined the event would be of little value if they were unable to sell cards and books. Foote said she would await contact from the Sesquicentennial representative and determine if there was any additional value for the group. Hazel made a motion giving Foote authority, after receiving additional information on the event, to reserve a table for $250 for the MN 150 Celebration being held on May 17 and 18, if a value could be established. Bolke seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. 1860 EAGAN MAP Families List / Celebration of Descendants in Eagan Hazel will continue to work on finding an 1860 map. Hazel reviewed with the Committee two e-mails from Liz Witt regarding old plat maps. Foote stated Eric Sletterdahl, Community Development GIS Specialist, had created some plat maps for Witt but was not sure if they were hand created or electronic. He will look into it further and let us know if they are available and could fit the timeframe the Committee is looking for. DETERMINE MN 150 HISTORICAL SIGN LOCATION Historical Committee April 1, 2008 After a brief background on the item by Foote, the Committee discussed locations of a historical sign. The Committee agreed the sign should include representation of the MN sesquicentennial celebration logo and that the sign should be dedicated in the fall. After the Committee discussed several options, Scott’s General Store, Nicols Station, the Halfway House and Wescott Station as possible sign locations, it was determined by the Committee that the historical sign would interpret Scott’s General Store and be placed in a location near the Highway 13/Nicols Road area, to be specifically mapped at a later date. OTHER Foote discussed an e-mail from Voracek suggesting the planting of flowers for the sesquicentennial on the hillside near the 35E/Deerwood water reservoir. Foote is discussing the possibilities with Parks/Forestry staff and will report back to the group in May. Foote also mentioned that Flag Day falls on the Saturday prior to Father’s Day this year but the committee determined it will skip a Flag Day celebration this year in light of its June 1 open house and dedication event. The Committee also discussed the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Flag; and asked that Foote investigate purchasing one. Wade presented an article and stated, in1960, he was the first Cub Master in Eagan. He donated an old map of the Cedar Grove area to the Eagan Historical Society that was used in his kitchen and contained numerous telephone numbers of Eagan residents of that era in the old 5-digit format. Hazel called Dave DiIoia about old photos of the Cedarvale Mall in the 60s or 70s as the committee nor the Dakota County Historical Society do not appear to have any. It was suggested by DiIoia to look at the old Eagan phone books as these businesses were often the early sponsors/advertisors. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Eagan Historical Society will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT Upon motion by Voracek, seconded by Hazel, the meeting adjourned at 4:31 p.m. All members voted in favor.
