Document - Historical Society Minutes - Eagan Historical Society Special Meeting Minutes 11102009 - 11/10/2009MEETING NOTES/MINUTES EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY TUESDAY NOVEMBER 10, 2009 3:30 p.m. – EAGAN ROOM Members present: Millie Gignac, Ted Ringberg, Dawn Simpson, Kim Hazel, Alyce Bolke, Gin Knight, Mary Ellen Voracek and Carolyn Krech. Staff present: Communication Coordinator Joanna Foote and Fire Chief Mike Scott. Knight chaired the meeting. Hazel took meeting notes. EAGAN SESQUICENTENNIAL PLANNING Foote introduced the item stating the 150th Committee Board has been formed and also stated Scott Swenson has been elected Chair of the Committee. Foote stated local organizations have been invited to a community meeting and a logo has been designed. Fire Chief Scott explained the new Fire Safety Campus building and highlighted the general components of the building that will feature historical displays and house Jenny the Fire Engine and the old Police Car. The Committee discussed the time capsule which will likely be incorporated into the cornerstone. It was noted the first possible completion date will be in early 2011. Ringberg noted that the proposal to start the Fire Department in 1960 was for $16,000. He also stated he has lots of clipping and photos, including Miss Eagan photos, and is creating a scrapbook about the Fire Department for display at the Old Town Hall during open houses which will help represent the Department. Currently the Fire Department display is at City Hall and there is really no space to move that display to the old Town Hall, so a scrapbook/photo album can fit into the space well. HISTORICAL MARKER The Committee discussed historical markers for the years 2009 and 2010. Simpson stated she had spoken with the McCarthys but had yet to get additional photos or information from them. Foote suggested putting off the Patrick Eagan Park/McCarthy property marker until 2010 so we can fund a sign yet in 2009. The Committee discussed a marker on Dodd Road at Highline Trail and another at Starks Halfway House. The Committee discussed photos of Starks/Halfway House. It was noted that originally there were two houses; one was across Dodd Road. Simpson will call Rebecca Snyder at Dakota County to see if they have photos from Starks that are currently hanging there. If not, she will coordinate scanning the photos that are currently on display. Simpson made a motion for a historical marker at Dodd Road in 2009 and, if possible, at Starks in 2009. Voracek seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. It was noted that a budget request was made to fund two markers in 2010 as it is the 150th Anniversary of Eagan. The Committee suggested markers denoting locations that would have been developed or of note in 1860 when Eagan was founded. One will likely be Starks. The Committee was asked to bring back ideas for the second marker to the December meeting. The Committee discussed photos including a 1950 photo of Carlson Lake from Senator Jim Carlson’s sister, a 1935 photo of St. John’s picnic and a Minnie Trapp family photo. Simpson is pursuing information on Cedarvale from Ben Franklin’s owners. OTHER The Committee discussed display cases at Eagan City Hall and window material for UV protection. Gignac will check with the Minnesota Historical Society for recommendation for film for use for window protection. Ringberg indicated he likely could find information regarding a Web site address for the Millennium Trail created by Matt Brown for Boy Scouts. The link we had on the City Web site no longer works and it would be helpful to reconnect this trail information. NEXT MEETING DATE The next meeting of the Eagan Historical Society will be Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. ADJOURNMENT A motion by Bolke, seconded by Gignac, the meeting was adjourned at 4:35p.m.
