SEPTEMBER 7, 2010
3:30 p.m. – EAGAN ROOM
Members present: Joan Remick, Millie Gignac, Ted Ringberg, Martin DesLauriers, Mary Ellen
Voracek (Chair), Kim Hazel, Bernie Jansen and Dawn Simpson. Also present was Communication
Coordinator Joanna Foote.
KNIGHT MEMORIAL DECISIONS
The Committee discussed wood and recycled product options for a memorial bench for Gin
Knight which Kim Hazel spoke with Eagan Park Maintence staff about. Hazel noted the cost of
the plaque is about $140 which will include a coating over for protection. She did not recall the
price of the benches but Foote recalled it was about $750—she will confirm.
Hazel made a motion to purchase a bench from recycled materials in honor of Gin Knight.
DesLauriers seconded the motion. All members voted in favor.
The Committee discussed the two upcoming video interview times planned. Joe Reid has offered
to help interpret the Shields family history as his mother was a Shield.
Jansen noted he had invited members from the Dakota County Historical Society to the Dodd Road
Marker Dedication Event following today’s meeting. He also invited Eagan Historical Society
members to the Civil War event being held at the LeDuc House by the Dakota County Historical
Society this weekend. Jansen shared a detailed scheduled of the events with the Committee.
Time Capsule Item Collection/Assessment
Foote introduced the item stating that a Press Release was going to local newspapers regarding a
collection beginning (or comntinuing) for items to be placed in a Time Capsule to be placed in the
floor of the new Fire Administration Building for opening in 2060. She stated that a team will be
needed to help evaluate items that come in to determine which are the best fit and will best reflect
life in 2010, to be placed inside the Time Capsule box. She noted she would like one or two
representatives of the Historical Society to be a part of this panel. Jansen noted that he and Millie
Gignac had been involved in the collection of items for a previous time capsule. Ringberg stated
he can provide microfilming of any of the items if we wish to have them stored in that way.
POTENTIAL GRANT APPLICATION
Simpson shared an update on what grants are available through the State of Minnesota Land and
Legacy funds. Foote will contact the individual that may be available to assist the committee with
grant application, and she will find a couple of other grant writers for comparison so the group can
determine how it wishes to proceed.
The Committee thanked Simpson for her work in designing and coordinating the sending of
invitations out for the dedication event.
Simpson met with Jodi and Jean; descendants of the McCarthy family, to see the site of the
original sod house on the McCarthy farm and to learn more about McCarthy family history.
Simpson also stated she spoke with Pat Pahl, who is a descendant of the Quirk family, and knew
Catherine Eagan. She is collecting and scanning photos from all of these families.
