Document - Historical Society Minutes - Eagan Historical Society Minutes 11092010 - 11/9/2010MEETING NOTES/MINUTES EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY TUESDAY NOVEMBER 9, 2010 3:30 p.m. – EAGAN ROOM Members present: Millie Gignac, Ted Ringberg, Martin DesLauriers, Mary Ellen Voracek (Chair), Kim Hazel (Vice-Chair), Bernie Jansen, Dawn Simpson and Alyce Bolke. Also present was Communication Coordinator Joanna Foote. AGENDA ADOPTION All members voted in favor of approving the minutes of the October 5, 2010 regular meeting of the Eagan Historical Society as presented. Dawn Simpson was the meeting Secretary of the November 9, 2010 meeting. Hazel noted that a sympathy card had been sent, on behalf of the group, to the Joan Remmick-Kennedy family following the passing of Joan’s husband. Foote noted that Joe Reid is undergoing heart valve surgery today and the group wished him a speedy recovery. TIME CAPSULE INFORMATION Foote introduced the item and asked Director of Communications, Tom Garrison to make the report. Garrison noted that many specific items have been donated to the Time Capsule including a Delta Airlines model aircraft, “Do Campaign” materials from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, etc. Garrison noted that the Capsule will likely be placed in the floor of the new Fire Safety Center building after the 1st of the year, at earliest, and a Grand Opening celebration for the Center will be planned in the late Spring. Jansen offered to donate a similar or duplicate timeline report from Univac/Lock Martin which was prepared for the State time capsule in 2008. He discussed Univac and its predecessor – ERA which started in St. Paul in 1945and a book on the first computers, which were developed by the company. He and Gignac served on the committee that documented the company history as they are both retired from Univac. They noted much of the historical data regarding the company may be found at www.vipclubmn.org Committee members Jansen and Gignac have volunteered to be on the Time Capsule Review Committee. Historical Society members discussed items they could contribute to the Time Capsule including a deck of cards, a Lone Oak Book and perhaps some printed photo’s, etc. RECAP OF HAUNTED PLACES & LAST OPEN HOUSE EVENT Foote introduced the item stating that approximately 80+ people attended the speaker event and the Open House at the 1914 Town Hall. She further stated there seemed to be quite a bit of interest and indicated possibly more events like this taking place in the future. TASTE OF EAGAN EVENT & VIDEO Foote played the 150th video and the 3-minute history video prepared from the history interviews that have been conducted. These were both presented at the Taste of Eagan event. Foote noted that the longer version of the History video will be completed as more interviews are completed. She also noted that more photos may need to be gathered in order to represent certain eras of Eagan’s history, especially the 1960-1980s. HISTORICAL MARKERS Foote stated the Town Hall sign should be completed in approximately two weeks. She further noted the bench is on track to be done soon and also stated the Committee still holds a small balance in its account for an historical marker. She will continue working on a marker for completion by year-end. She is working on several markers and will complete the one which has the most thorough information by year-end. Patrick Eagan – McCarthy Park Quigley – Lexington Athletic fields Simpson has received the copies of homestead papers and other documents related to the McCarthy/Patrick Eagan Park property. It is noted that the Homestead Papers in particular are of a poor quality. Simpson will call Rebecca Snyder at Dakota County Historical Society to see if the County can supply us with clearer quality copies. GRANT APPLICATION CONSIDERATION Foote introduced the item stating grant applications are moving forward. She will be contacting the grant writer regarding writing a Land and Legacy grant that will request funds for digital imaging of the Historical Society files. Foote will also contact the company that provided the City’s document imaging system to determine a price for the scanning of these files so that the grant can be requested in an adequate amount. ADDITIONAL VIDEO INTERVIEWS Foote stated additional interviews will go forward in the future, likely spring of 2011. OTHER Ringberg brought in an article for the Historical Society files regarding the Cedar Avenue Bridge. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
