EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
TUESDAY
DECEMBER 4, 2012
3:30 p.m. – EAGAN ROOM
Members present: Ted Ringberg, Bernie Jansen, Chair Mary Ellen Voracek, Vice-Chair Kim Hazel, Martin
DesLauriers, Lori Tripp, Joan Remick, Joe Reid. Also present was Communication Coordinator Joanna Foote.
MEETING MINUTES & SECRETARY
The minutes from October 2, 2012 were accepted.
ELECTION JUDGE INTERVIEW RECAP
The committee watched the Election video created for Election night coverage which contained an interview
of Pat Kaeder and Carol Vihovde, two longtime Eagan Election Judges.
LOCKHEED MARTIN UPDATE
Foote and Jansen updated the group and showed photos of the event that took place in late November at
Lockheed Martin to allow present and former Lockheed/Sperry staff to view historic items from the
company. These items are being donated to the Dakota County Historical Society Museum as Lockheed
Martin is ceasing operations in early 2013 at its Eagan facility.
Included in the packet was a draft history, written by Joe Reid, of the Reid family property which
subsequently became the Sperry Univac, Lockheed Martin property. This is being compiled for our files and
use as well as being provided for the Dakota County Historical Society display.
TOM HEDGES RETIREMENT UPDATE
Information regarding the community reception for retiring City Administrator Hedges was presented to the
group. The event will be held February 7, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a program at 6:30 p.m. at the Eagan
Community Center.
Foote also asked for volunteers to coordinate a display featuring Hedges, that can be set up in the display
windows at the Community Center in advance and until the event, for viewing by the public. Tripp
volunteered to lead the effort and others indicated they would help her as well.
TOWN HALL UPDATES
Two Open Houses were held with fairly good attendance in October at which the historical trivia questions
were used with great success. Two scout troupes also held meetings at the Town Hall in November at which
Ted Ringberg, a former Scoutmaster presided. He came in his Scoutmaster uniform and presented Eagan’s
history to the groups. It was well received.
Foote indicated that the doorframe at the 1914 Town Hall will require repair as the wood has rotted below the
door sill and the kick plate no longer holds and prevents the door from opening or closing. She will request
that Parks Maintenance staff make repairs over the winter.
Members also asked if maintenance staff could move the three City flags from their present location on the
north wall to the west wall above the voting booths to allow the north wall to be better used for display space.
Foote will coordinate.
Members indicated that if funds remain in 2012 budget they would like to have a TV/DVD combo for
showing, the numerous historic videos we now have, at Open Houses. Tripp made a motion and Remick
seconded with all members voting in favor. Foote will purchase a TV/DVD combo player for this use.
BOOK PROJECT
The book project is progressing albeit at a slower pace than had been hoped. Foote will update further as
progress warrants.
DISCUSS DATE CHANGE FOR NEXT MEETING
Throughout 2012, numerous meeting dates have fallen on holidays during the first week of the month and
have required change. The January 2013 date also falls on the New Year Holiday. Foote questioned the group
if it might be preferable to change the regular meeting date to the second Tuesday of each month instead.
Historically, Councilmembers Wachter and Blomquist sat on the committee and the meeting date aligned
with City Council dates, making their attendance easier. As no current Councilmembers presently attend, this
is no longer a factor.
DesLauriers motioned and Hazel seconded the motion, with all members voting in favor, to move the
Historical Society regular meeting date to the second Tuesday of each month beginning January 8, 2013.
OTHER
NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 3:30 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
DesLauriers made a motion to adjourn the History Committee meeting and Remick seconded the motion. All
members voted and adjournment was at 4:45 p.m.
