Document - Historical Society Minutes - Historical Society Meeting Minutes - 4/1/2014MEETING NOTES/MINUTES EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY TUESDAY April 1, 2014 3:30 p.m. – 2nd Floor Conference Room A/B Members present: Chair Mary Ellen Voracek, Vice-Chair Kim Hazel, Martin DesLauriers, Millie Gignac, Steve Hansen, Bernie Jansen, Norm Anderson, Dawn Simpson and Lori Tripp. Also present was Communication Coordinator Joanna Foote. MEETING MINUTES & SECRETARY The minutes from March, 2014 were accepted as presented. HISTORICAL SOCIETY BUSINESS 1914 Town Hall Museum Discussions Foote updated the committee on the 1914 Town Hall progress. The group discussed the article that was publish in the Sun Thisweek Newspaper regarding the February 14th article entitled It’s the end of the line for 1914 Town Hall. The correction was included in the the next week’s edition and the headline was revised online: Two proposals have been received for architectural services, to prepare design options and cost estimates for several scenarios to restore/relocate the 1914 Town Hall Museum and expand the Eagan Historical Society functional space. The City Council took action to enter into a contract with Mohagen Hansen a local firm that has partnered with the MacDonald & Mack, (MacDonald & Mack specific experience with historical projects). The firm will meet with staff and various stakeholders in early May to assess Historical Society and community needs so that they may prepare proposals of the design options and cost estimates at a June Council workshop. Staff has also met with a variety of possible partners organizations to determine interest and feasibility to co-locate within the former Fire Administration building (one of the potential scenarios) for Historical Society purposes. Interest has been shown by several parties. Lynn Gruber the new DCHS Director, met with City staff members and toured the building. She indicated she liked the space and could see a number of potential options it could offer. DCHS is in the process of a site analysis to determine what the future of its present building. Even if they decide to stay at the existing South St. Paul location she could envision the idea of locating a portion of their programing or services in an alternate location such as Eagan’s. Other possible partners being contacted are the Eagan Convention and Visitor Bureau, Northern Dakota County Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Airlines Museum, Eagan Art House or other Parks programming. These partner options will only be developed in the scenario that utilizes the Former Fire Administration Building. 1914 Town Hall 100 Anniversary Recognition Ideas September Commemorative Event The Committee discussed possible dates for a 100th Anniversary event. Foote noted several available dates which were not already claimed for other City or Community events near the September 8 timeframe the Committee had discussed. The committee discussed potential activities for the celebration and posed some questions regarding the use of the garage bays at the former Fire Administration building in case of rain. Foote indicated that they are presently being leased but will check into availability in September. She indicated she could also check the feasibility of the Police garage bays if needed and will find out about tents owned by Parks & Recreation also. After a lengthy conversation about the celebration activities, a vote was taken for a sub- committee and chair. Tripp will chair the event along with Voracek and Hazel. It was agreed that they will host a small event on Monday, September 8, 2014 introducing the commemorative painting of the 100 year anniversary will be held. Bus Tour Foote indicated a wish to tour Eagan with Martin DesLauriers to capture more specifics about former farms and other locations within Eagan that can’t be well determined on maps. Other members have indicated interest in being involved in that event. Foote has reached out to Brent Cory of the Eagan Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and he has some ideas about potentially obtaining a bus for the tour. The tour would likely be schedule in late May or June. Wachter Memorial Foote will acquire ideas and pricing for an outdoor quality plaque dedicated to Ted Wachter’s service to the City and the Historical Society. Once a permanent solution is in place for an Historical Museum, a tree will be planted and the plaque will be located at the tree. Work Session/Filing Needed Foote stated that the committee needs to address the filing and organizing needs in the basement area. Also the Town Hall display that is in progress in the Municipal Center display window (1st floor) needs to be completed. There are available display cabinets on the second floor as well as one on the first floor that could be utilized for Historical Society displays. Several committee members indicated they would be available Thursday, April 30 in the afternoon. Foote will send a notice. Other DesLauriers provided a copy of the 1949 minutes from the Old Town Hall Board Meeting showing the settlement and disbursements of bills with the town treasurer he had. Jansen discussed the 75 anniversary of the DCHS. He distributed the program he had created for the recognition lunch for the volunteers that help throughout the year. Jansen said he had put together a brochure with all the volunteer’s names and mention there were about 40. Also as a part of the celebration is a fund raiser offering Silver memberships for $250 each. Finally, on May 3rd DCHS will be holding an Anniversary Dance at the Rosemount Community Center. All Eagan Historical Society members are welcome to purchase tickets to attend.
