MEETING NOTES/MINUTES
EAGAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY
TUESDAY
November 6, 2014
3:30 p.m. – 1st Floor Conference Room
Members present: Chair Mary Ellen Voracek, Vice-Chair Kim Hazel, Millie Gignac, Ted Ringberg. Also
present was Communication Coordinator Joanna Foote.
MEETING MINUTES & SECRETARY
No formal meeting was held in October due to Elections and the members’ attendance at the Special City
Council meeting with dinner preceding. Notes provided as an update for the Dakota County Historical
Society were included with the packet.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY BUSINESS
1914 Town Hall Artwork
Foote provided an update that the commemorative prints of the original oil painting by artist Larry
Landis have been selling steadily. She indicated that member Ringberg and she had brought the prints to
the recent lunch at the Lone Oak Senior Room at the Eagan Community Center to inform the group
about the sale of the prints. She also provided posters that could be provided to organizations or hung
at local establishments throughout Eagan to inform the community of the availability of the prints.
Members discussed various locations that could be considered. Discussion was also held about the
possibility of bringing the prints to other local organizations. Members listed the Rotary Club, Lions and
Lioness, Exchange Club, Eagan Women of Today and others as possibilities. Foote and members will
work on finding contacts for these groups and arranging visits prior to the holidays.
1914 Town Hall Building Update
Foote noted that the architects will be presenting options for the 1914 Town Hall -- that have been
further refined—to the City Council at its Tuesday, November 12, Special City Council Meeting. Members
were encouraged to attend if interested. It is unknown if there will be an opportunity to speak to the
Council.
2014 Historical Society Interpretive Sign & Remaining Budget Items
Foote indicated that funds remain for an historical marker to be produced and placed in the community.
Members discussed various topics and locations. It was determined that a sign would be appropriate at
the new Bridgeview Park related either to the Cedar Bridges, old and new or related to the Niclos area.
Another sign suggested for future consideration is related to the history and naming of Moonshine Park.
Other
Member Jansen was unable to attend but forwarded the latest issue of “Over the Years” a publication of
the Dakota County Historical Society. The publication includes a submitted story by Eagan Historical
Society Member Joe Reid entitled “The Reids of Yankee Doodle & Pilot Knob.” Reid has done extensive
research related to his family and has interpreted this information both in the photo display he created
for the Eagan Historical Society, currently on display at the Eagan Community Center and now depicted
in this publication.
Member Hazel brought a variety of items for the Society collection including various newspaper
clippings; a MN Certified Snowmobile Safety patch and certificate; and items from the funeral of Alyce
Bolke.
Chair Voracek submitted a collection of articles related to Alyce Bolke’s service to the community which
were received from the Bolke family following the memorial for Alyce. Many of these items replace or
enrich the items lost in the Town Hall fire from the “First Ladies of Eagan” display.
Ringberg submitted a newsletter he received from the Burnsville Historical Society, a photo and
comments related to a 1942 Town baseball team. Discussion occurred about the Eagan Historical Society
creating a newsletter. The item will be discussed further at a future meeting.
Meeting Adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
NEXT MEETING(s)
There will be no December meeting of the Historical Society. The City Council will hold a December 9,
Special City Council Meeting at 5:30 p.m. at which it will hear an architect report related to future space
needs options for Eagan City Hall. This discussion will likely include possibilities for Historical Society
functions. Interested members are encouraged to attend.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 3:30p.m.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 4:30p.m.
