Eagan Historical Society Report to DCHS Board
April – June 2015
Update on 1914 Town Hall Recovery /Transition Planning
In April, he Eagan City Council took action to Approve Plans & Specifications, for the Old Town Hall
repairs and renovation and authorize advertisement of bids.
Two bids were received in May with the intention of project construction beginning in June. However,
due to a Community Development Block Grant the City received for the project, further documentation
and assessment is required by the State Historical Preservation Organization to determine National
Registration eligibility before the project may proceed. The project timeline is now expected to include
bid award in early August with an approximate 3.5 month construction process to follow.
Town Hall Display reassembly
Members of the Historical Society have held 4-worksessions in May and June to identify salvaged items from
the 1914 Town Hall and begin collecting them for display assembly. The hope is to have a number of quality
displays reassembled when the 1914 Town Hall becomes available for use. Member Ringberg has created a
new suggested timeline layout for displays which might better lead visitors through the building and its
displays. This format is being utilized as the members view and structure potential display materials at a City
building which is available for temporary use.
Police 50th Anniversary
The Eagan Police Department held its 50th Anniversary celebration on Thursday, May 14th, 2015, at the
Municipal Center Campus from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. nearly 2,000 people attended dispite the fact it was a
rainy evening. Most displays and activities were held inside the Civic Arena. Tours were given of the
Police Facility. As part of the 100-year commemoration, Communications Coordinator Foote has written
three articlae chronicling portions of the Eagan Police Department history, for the Experience Eagan
Newsletter. The March/April issue featured the inception of the Police Department in 1965; The
May/June issue feature recollections by Rodger Slater, an early Eagan officer reflecting on the early 1970
and the July August issue focused on the early 1980s. Two more articles will be written in the two
remaining issues of 2015. Copies of these articles are available on the City Web site
at www.cityofeagan.com/Police50.
