These services were conducted from August 28 through November 16, 1995, on an on-call basis. These observations were performed by Joel Alsum, a level II technician qualified in accordance with American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)publication SNT-TC-1A, 1988 Edition, as an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector, and as an International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) certified special inspector for structural steel and welding. Scope of Services During this time period, the following observations were performed. • Visual examinations of field welds • Bolting observations • Deck weld observations Results A summary of the results for our services is described below. Copies of our Daily Observation Reports were left at the project after completion of each site visit. All observations performed were found acceptable as indicated below. For specific information, please refer to the attached Daily Observation Reports. Visual Weld Examinations. Visual weld examinations were conducted in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1-1994, Sections 3.6 and 8.15 requirements. These observations were performed at the following locations. Allen Industrial Equity 1660 South Highway 100, Suite 530-6W Minneapolis, MN 55416 Dear Mr. Allen: Re: Summary Report for Construction Testing Services and Special Inspections, Interstate Crossing, Lone Oak Road and Lone Oak Circle, Eagan, Minnesota As you authorized, we have performed construction testing services and special inspections at the Interstate Crossing buildings in Eagan, Minnesota. This report provides a summary of the construction testing services and special inspections. Site Grading Braun Intertec Corporation (Braun Intertec) performed excavation observations and compaction testing during the site grading for the two buildings at the Interstate Crossing project. The results of our observations and compaction tests were summarized in our report dated August 17, 1995,Braun Intertec Project BODX-95-107C. The report was previously submitted and is attached to this report. The compaction tests performed in the wall backfill and loading dock ramps are attached to this report. Footing and Reinforcing Observations Prior to concrete placement, random hand auger probes were performed in the footing and column pad areas. The hand auger probes generally encountered poorly graded sand with silt and clayey sand which were judged to be in a medium dense condition. Prior to concrete placement, observations of the footings, interior column pads and walls with transverse reinforcing was conducted. In addition, Brawl Intertec observed the placement of the concrete for footings, interior column pads and reinforced walls which contained transverse reinforcing. Based on our observations, the reinforcing in these areas was placed in general accordance with the available construction plans and specifications. We have attached the special inspector daily report forms which provide a summary of our observations of the reinforcing, a copy of which was left on site after our observation. Industrial Equity Project BODX-95-200C • November 20, 1995 Page 2 Concrete Testing Braun Intertec cast concrete test cylinders for the footings, column pads, loading dock walls and slab-on-grade. The concrete tests met the specified 28-day strength requirements. Results of the concrete compression tests were previously submitted and are attached to this report. Structural Steel Observations Nondestructive examination services were performed on this project during erection of the precast and structural steel. The results of our structural steel observations were previously submitted in our daily observation reports. Our final structural steel nondestructive examination services report will be completed and a copy sent to you within ten 'ng days. Summary Based on the results of our excavation observations, hand auger probes and compaction testing, it is our opinion the soils encountered and the fill soils placed are suitable for footing and floor slab support. Based on the results of our observations, the footings, column pads and reinforced walls with transverse reinforcing was placed in general accordance with the available construction plans and specifications. Based on the results of our concrete tests, it appears the foundation, wall and floor slab concrete met the 28-day strength requirements. Based on the results of our structural steel observations, the welds and bolting were found acceptable. General Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this area. The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the soils exposed in the excavation bottoms for fill and foundation support. The purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the engineered fill soils placed for foundation support. Available Information We were provided with a geotechnical evaluation report prepared by American Engineering Testing, Inc. The report is titled, "Geotechnical Exploration and Review for Proposed Interstate Crossing", Project Number AET95-1310," dated April 3, 1995. Two commercial buildings will be constructed. Both buildings will be slab-on-grade, one-level structures supported by spread footing foundations. We assume the footings will be designed for a soil bearing pressure of up to 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf). Excavation Observations The excavation observations were conducted by senior engineering assistant and engineering assistant from June 9 to July 7, 1995. Random, shallow (about 3 feet deep) hand auger probes were used to assist in evaluating the excavation bottom soils. Estimates of the soil consistency or density were based on the penetration and turning resistances of the hand auger probes. Soil classifications were determined in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures by examining the hand auger probe cuttings. • Rochon Corporation Project BODX-95-107C August 17, 1995 Page 2 The excavating contractor used a backhoe the dozer to remove existing fill, topsoil and/or soft clays from the building areas. The sidewalls of the excavations indicated the bottom of the excavations extended into the underlying stiff lean clay and/or medium dense poorly graded sand with silt. Groundwater was not encountered during the excavation observations. Based on the construction staking provided by others, approximately 20 to 23 feet of oversizing was provided in the excavations for the two building pads. The attached sketches outline the approximate bottom of excavation elevations, oversizing and excavation limits. Compaction Testing A total of 69 compaction tests and four retests were taken in the fill placed to establish footing • and floor slab grade. All tests or retests met or exceeded the minimum compaction requirement of 95 percent of standard Proctor density (ASTM D 698). The results of the compaction tests and Proctor curves were previously submitted and are attached to this report. Conclusions Based on the soil borings, excavation observations and hand auger probes, it is our opinion the stiff lean clay and medium dense poorly graded sand with silt soils encountered in the excavation bottoms are adequate for fill and foundation support. Based on the construction staking provided by others, the excavations appear adequately oversized. Based on the results of our compaction tests, the fill appears adequate for foundation and floor slab support. General Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this area.
