George :F.. r_Tri -, " Page 2 ;of .4 Courseware Applications Application for Advisory Planning Commission -AV My wife and I decided to start looking for a larger house in the Spring of 1985. Our search was restricted to the 196 School District because we knew the excellent reputation held by the district and wanted the best educational opportunities for our children. We purchased a house in the Aspen Ridge development which is located between Yankee Doodle and Wescott roads, just off Elrene. Like our neighbors, we made a major financial commitment in our home and will make an even greater time commitment growing with the city of Eagan. As a result of conversations with our neighbors and with the encouragement of my wife, I decided to apply for one of the vacancies on the Advisory Planning Commission for the following reasons: * to preserve the aesthetic appeal of our community and to maintain and improve property values through responsible preservation of the environment and development of community facilities * to maintain a strong, viable economic base which provides employment opportunities and a solid tax base * to balance current development plans with community needs and emerging trends in the Metropolitan area * to influence future development by way of revising and extending the Comprehensive Guide Plan for the City of Eagan George F. Business As an owner and manager of a small business, Experience I have prepared and executed business plans, set and followed budgets, negotiated, loans, sold highly -specialized service contracts, and managed supervisors. My job requires that I be a professional learner. I must learn and understand before I can train -ethers. While I have no formal preparation in city planning, I can, and am prepared to learn, whatever is needed in order to fulfill the appointed responsibilites. I would like to be appointed to the City of Eagan Planning Commission because I want to contribute towards making Eagan a healthful and prosperous city in which to live. My academic and business experience have taught me how to analyze problems, identify key assumptions and constraints, and to tailor recommendations and plans to meet established goals. As a member of the Advisory Planning Commission, I will work towards planning for a prosperous and healthy Eagan in.the years to come. Thank you for your consideration. George F. T-raynor ^_ " :^f 7,•30 City of Eagan 3830 Pilot Knob Road Eagan, Minnesota 55122 Dear Council Members and other concerned parties; I am submitting my resume and this statement of intent for your review in considering my appointment to the city planning commission. Below I have provided a brief description of my qualifications which may help in your decision. - Until recently, I have been employed with a local developer of commercial office and retail space in Eagan. In this capacity I have attended numerous planning commission and city council meetings, where I have become aware of the process used by government officials, staff members and citizens of Eagan in attempting to resolve their concerns. - Also, my employment with this local developer has provided me with a substantial understanding of the .concerns of local businesses and citizens. The knowledge of these concerns are the basis from which I will derive my direction when voting on issues of concern. - I am an active member of the Eagan Optimist Club and have enjoyed the participation we have had in Eagan's recent year-long 125th Birthday Celebration. - I have held various elected positions throughout my career, therefore I am familiar with generally accepted rules of order. - I have worked and lived in Eagan since April of 1984 and have owned a home here since April of 1985. I am aware of the tremendous growth Eagan is experiencing and look forward to being a part of this growth. In conclusion, I would like to state that I am excited to have the opportunity to provide a voice for the citizens of Eagan and to serve the _ community in which my family and I live. Unfortunately, however, there were no vacancies. I also mentioned at the time that I had no interest in serving on any other commissions. By background prior to moving to Eagan in 1984, included a great deal of civic involvement and activities including: W. St. Paul Park Board 1980 - 1984 Public Relations Chairman - W. St. Paul Kiwanis`-- 1980 =. 1985 Board of Directors VOICE Newspaper - 1981 - 1985 Board of Directors W. St. Paul Kiwanis -- 1984 - 1985 Chairman, Sponsored Youth - IV. St. Paul Kiwanis.=-- 1984 - 1985 I have been involved in residential real estate sales since 1979. I spent my first three years in sales, and the past three in management. I have an interest in broadening my horizons,at this point in my life, by serving on the Planning Commission. My real estate background will be beneficial in helping me understand the perspectives of applicants, while my management background ( I have 25 employees) will help me work with people towards a resolution of differences. My background on various Boards and Director positions will show (you are welcome to check with these organizations) that I will apply myself to any position to which I am appointed or elected. I can learn a great deal in this position, as well as serve the community. I would appreciate an opportunity to apply for a Planning Commission vacancy, if there is one. You can be rest assured that I would serve in a diligent, thorough and sensitive manner. Please contact me if the current members will not be reappointed. I would also be willing to fill any mid-term vacancies which are created. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully, I Bob Shields 2988 Pilot Knob Road Eagan, NN. 55121 g,/0 December 30, 1985 Mr. Thomas L. Hedges City Administrator 3830 Pilot Knob Road Eagan, MN 55121 Dear Tom: It has been a pleasure serving our community on the Burnsville Eagan Cable Communications Commission since my appointment in 1982. During this time cable television went from a hopeful dream to one of the most successful cable systems in the Metropolitan area. My involvement in the RFP, evaluation of and awarding of the franchise, and monitoring of construction has helped to insure the success of the cable franchise. Some items still remain to be completed such as: the system audit upon completion (currently in progress), promotion and involvement of community in local programming, and administration of the ongoing franchise. In a conversation with my neighbor, -Michael Wold, he stated that he will not be seeking reappointment to the Planning Commission. As you • my recall, I originally applied for a position on the Planning Commission. That desire still remains. Therefore, I am officially applying for the position being vacated by Michael Wold. With the completion of con- struction of cable, this appears to be the appropriate time to make the transition. If appointed to the Planning Commission, I would recommend Alternate, Ron Jensen, be appointed to fill my position for Cable. However, if the esteemed Council wishes that I continue serving with the Cable Commission, I will fulfill that wish., Most importantly, I want to continue serving our growing community of Eagan in any way that will be most beneficial. George :F.. r_Tri -, " Page 2 ;of .4 Courseware Applications Application for Advisory Planning Commission -AV My wife and I decided to start looking for a larger house in the Spring of 1985. George F.
