Describe the land use and pertinent geographic features within 1,000 feet of the site. (i.e. residential property, industrial, wetlands, etc.) LJ 1 I Land use within 1, 000 feet of the site is varied. The site is situated in a strip mall. Residential property is present east and south of the site. The area south to west of the site is used as baseball fields. The area west to north of the site appears to be commercial property, as does the area north to east of the site. A school is present just over 1, 000 feet northeast of the site. Two holding ponds are apparently present within 1, 000 feet of the site: west-northwest across Lexington Avenue, by the baseball fields, and north-northwest across Dii fley Road and Lexington Avenue by the commercial property. B. Provide the following information for all tanks removed and any remaining at the site: Table 1. Identify any surface soil contamination. No surface soil contamination was discovered. Liesch was not present during the uncovering of the tanks and was not able to examine the top several feet ofsoil above the tank basin. All stockpiled soil was put back into the excavation with at least four feet of clean sandfill placed above the contaminated stockpile. No surface soil contamination was observed in the dispenser area. All contaminated soil from the line area was ' at 2'or more below ground surface with the exception of Ll, which had a PID discovered reading of 19.2 ppm but was non-detectfor GRO/BTEX in laboratory analysis. ' H. What was the volume of the release? (if known): Unknowngallons C. Describe the location and status of the other components of the tank system(s) (i.e., transfer locations, ' valves, piping and dispensers) for those tanks listed above. Vent piping was located on the east side of the Tank Basin. Soil surrounding the vent piping was screened using a PID; the three samples read 3.8 ppm (Tank]), 1.3 ppm (Tank 2) and 4.7 ppm (Tank ' 3) and showed no sign of impacts. Transfer piping ran from the west side of the tank basin to the dispenser islands along an east-west axis. Dispensers were located at I S feet, 45 feet, and 65 feet west-northwest of the northernmost UST. ' D. Identify and describe the source(s) or suspected source(s) of the release or contamination encountered, and how the release or contamination was discovered. ' Check all that apply: 0 Piping, []Tank, Q Dispenser, Q Pump/Turbine, 0 Spill/Overfill The release was reported after a PID reading of 1, 616 ppm and associated strong gasoline odor was detected on the southeast side of the tank basin during excavation on 412712007. Additional PID readings of 226.0 and 236.9 were detected in samples collected beneath transfer lines on 51212007. ' Gasoline-contaminated sail beneath transfer lines is believed to be due to faulty seals or corrosion of lines. ' E. Identify the cause of the release (tank and/or piping). Briefly describe the field screening methods used to distinguish contaminated from uncontaminated soil: ' Soil samples collected during soil boring completion were screened for the presence of organic vapors using the method described in Part I of MPCA document 4-01 "Soil and Groundwater Assessments Performed during Site Investigations". A photoionization detector (PID) equipped with a 10.6 electron volt (e. Y.) lamp was used to screen soil samples for the presence of organic vapors. The PID was calibrated prior to analyses on each day of field screening. A quart-size polyethylene freezer bag was filled approximately % full of the sample to be analyzed. Soil clumps were broken and the bag was shaken for approximately 15 seconds. After allowing the headspace to develop a minimum of 10 minutes, each field screening sample was analyzed using the PID. B. List soil vapor headspace analysis results collected during excavation of tanks, lines and dispensers, valves, and transfer locations. (i.e., soils left in place when excavation is complete). Code the samples with sampling depths in parentheses as follows: sidewall samples S-1 (8 feet), S-2 (4 feet), etc.; bottom samples B-1 (13 feet),'B-2 (14 feet), removed soil R-1 (4 feet), R-1 (8 feet), etc.; stockpile samples SP-1, etc; line samples L-1, L2, etc.; transfer locations T-1 (4 feet), T-1 (8 feet), ' etc.; dispensers D-1 (4 feet), etc. Be sure the sample codes correspond with the site map in part VI, below. ' D. Briefly describe the soil analytical sampling and handling procedures used: ' Soil samples were collected for laboratory analyses in accordance with MPCA document 4-01a "Soil and Groundwater Assessments Performed during Site Investigations"" Dedicated, disposable polyethylene gloves were used to containerize each soil sample in laboratory provided containers. Soil samples were placed in an ice-chilled cooler immediately following sample collection for transportation to the analytical laboratory. Samples were submitted to the laboratory within appropriate holding times. ' E.
