October 9, 1984 Dear Mr. Braun, I was very pleased to read the letter you recently wrote to Mayor Blornquist about your family's part in the history of Eagan. I don't know if you were aware of this, but Eagan is currently putting together a community history book which we hope to publish early next year. The mayor passed your letter on to me since I'm helping to coordinate the book. We'd like very much to include some information from you and your family in the book, if you're interested. I wish I could visit with you or your father in person, but perhaps you would be willing to share your (and his) memories about Eagan in a letter. If you don't want to take the time to write, you're welcome to call me collect at (612) 699-8226 (I'm usually home in the evenings.) If you think that any of your aunts whom you mentioned live in St. Paul would like to talk to us, we'd be glad to have their addresses or phone numbers. Here are a few questions that you might want to answer: Were your grandparents the first members of your family to come to Eagan? What were their names? Where did they come from, and why did they leave there? Did they have any stories about settling in Eagan? Can you describe what a typical day was like when you were young --what chores did you do, what was school like, what did you do for fun, etc.? If your parents or grand- parents told you any stories about what they did when they were young, we'd like to hear them also. Who built the log cabin you were born in? Can you describe what it looked like --what furniture was in it, how it was heated, how big it was, etc.? If you have any other information or stories, either yours or from other members of your family, that you think people might like to read about, please let me know. We are also trying to include as many old pictures as possible in the book. If you have any old photos of your family or home, or especially any that show how Eagan used to look, we would be very grateful if we could borrow them. If you have some you'd like to share, you can send them to Holly Duffy at City Hall, 3830 Pilot Knob Road, P.O. Box 21199, Eagan, MN 55121. We will make copies of them and return them to you. Since we're hoping to finish the book fairly soon, it would help if you could answer within the next week or two. I'm enclosing some copies of some old maps that will be included in the book. I found your family's name on two of them and thought you might like to see them. Thank you very much for writing. It was a real pleasure to hear from a member of one of Eagan's "settler families." I hope to hear from you again soon. Sincerely, Lisa Fleming History Consultant / /3'1C. /..l F3•r r' r O Y'7.a C•..a ry • 14 u.-. • 'LAT O11' r-Y-1' Scale 2 Inches to the Mile. i- Township 27 North. Vbert Bender a Coast Guardsman on active duty with the Marine Safety Office in St. Paul, spotted the flames and ruled to the V.A. Hospital to sound the alarm. Back at the compound he then climbed the fence to open the gate to let the Fire Department in, while doing so he sprained his ankle for his efforts and needed attention. * About $200 worth of rum and presents were given to the Sioux at the time the Pike treaty was signed in 1805, on Pike Island, with an unspecified amount to be paid at a later date. Congress provided for an additional $2000 worth of trade goods, but it was not until Leavenworth rrived that these goods were distributed. ** Within the fort a "commissories and Quarter Master's Store capable oaf containing four years supply of provisions" (later put to other uses because of its exceeding dampness); a stone workshop build- ing accomodating "Blacksmiths, carpenters, wheelrights etc. and the bake house"; A schoolhouse which later served as a chapel and billiard room; a guardhouse with "two cells for solitary confinement"; a valted double roofed powder magazine with walls six feet thick; (and) a sutler's store (similar to today's PX).
