or
)n After rush hour next Wednesday, the
66-year-old Mendota Bridge will
close for two years while its deck is
removed, rebuilt and widened.
For commuters curious about why it• -
can't remain open one side at a time;
the answer is that the deck is one •
piece. If it were cut in half length-
wise, both sides would tip off the
base.
The project will require rerouting the
estimated 34,000 vehiclesthat use .
the fourlane bridge each day be-
_ tween Minneapolis and Mendota on•
Hwy. 55.
The official detour — from Mendota -
Heights Rd. to Pilot Knob Rd. to
Interstate Hwy. 494 to Hwy. 5 — will •• .
add 10 to 15 minutes to a typical trip.:
And.for at least the first week, that ,
detour probably will be jammed with .-
traffic.
"We are anticipating that during the
_first week of the closure there will be '
some significant traffic amounts on
494 just because most people are.
' going to follow the detour on the first
week," said Laura Bird, a state high-.
.:way technician. "And then they will
realize there is a better way to go."
Bird said she does not expect signifi-
cant delays on I-494, however, be-
cause
cars following the detour will
reach Hwy. 5 east of Cedar Av. in
Bloomington. West of Cedar, traffic
levels double. '
Other suggested alternatives are In-
terstate Hwy. 35E; Cedar Av. and
Hwy. 13. State officials don't try to
recommend one over another be-
cause "we don't know where people
are going," said Bird, who added that
it works better for drivers to sit down
with a map and plot their own route.; •
Once drivers find their most conven-
ient alternatives, the extra traffic
should not cause anyone a problem,

THE MENDOTA BRIDGE
This bridge almost three quarters of a mile long was built
during the 19201s, the bridge was completed in 1927.
The bridge, connects Mendota on the South end to Fort Snel—
ling on the North. At one time it was one of the longest con—
crete bridges in the world. Many of the local boys worked on
this bridge.
On the day of the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Mrs Joseph
Perron carried her son Joseph Perron Jr. across the bridge to
Fort Snelling and then all the way back to the Mendota side of
the bridge.
