As the group got larger, McDonald*s manager y Peggy Knudsen suggested the group may want to set a regular day and time to meet and she would set aside an area in the di room to meet and play bingo or cards for that morning. mng g mornings a month were picked and the group000 h esday City of Eagan got other citizens together to talk about a comm the center, several McDonald's members joined the task force. unity They worked hard to make sure the new center had a place for a Senior Center. They worked with park Director Ken Vraa to f' space before the Center was built to meet as a senior rou and raa found the Eagan room at City Hall was available on wed esdVay mornings starting in 2001. The senior group grew and came to play cards, have pot lucks, crafts, etc. It was a great time to socialize and plan for the new Senior Center which opened to the seniors on May 14, 2003. The seniors were the first group toop e in the center which opened completely in September of 2003. n EAGAN SENIOR CENTER HISTORY, 2000 - 2021 WE have now entered into the year2021 and this picture album along with many news articles etc. from the beginning of the Senior Center look back on our Senior Center and it's many activities and events. In the year 2020 our city, nation and globe were hit with the Coronavirus or COVID-19 which killed millions of people and is still visible in our world in 2021. All activities ceased and the Community Center was shut down as was the case throughout the community and our nation. After a horrible year we had the options of vaccinations and boosters, etc which continue as of this writing. As the Senior Center continues in the years ahead, it will be up to it's members to continue to add to this album. It needs to grow with the Seniors and all they do here. When the senior center was getting organized, Cathy Bolduc was the staff supervisor and Cara Lardy was hired to work and help seniors during the week. Around 2007 Loudi Rivamonte became our Parks & Rec Senior supervisor, staff lead as Cara continued working in the Senior tenter. The Recession of 2008 changed our staff but Loudi remained. In 2018 Kaye Wahl started working with Loudi and became active with bringing on ideas for trips and programs and much more on hand in the Senior Center. The Eagan Senior center has evolved over the years many times as the Board of eight members would come up with many ideas for member participation. WE have a constitution and by-laws, budgets with a checking account to audit. Fifty Five became the age for members in 2016 and recently it was So and older with some evening activities added. Great memories and friends have been made. Back in 2004 -2008, there was the popular Antique Assessment shows which brought in many visitors and Casino Day. Pot lucks, were a main event the last Wed. of the month. Now there seems to be something going on in the Senior Center each day with discussions, book clubs, bridge, bingo and more. Annual events include Pizza party, Senior Expo, High Tea in November, Santa visits in Dec. News from the Front Porch started in 2000 and become the main source of information for Seniors in Eagan. Now it has been added to the Discover catalog of Park & Rec. events. The Quilters were a very active group and outgrew the Senior Center space and transferred to space at Quarry Park Shelter in 2016. New events and activities continue to change as members request them. There are more health and wellness classes as well as art classes and always there has been Defensive Driving class and special speakers. As the Senior Center continues to grow, in the Lone Oak Room, more events and activities will become available. WE started gathering in 2001.that's 20 year ago at city hall. The outlook for the Eagan Senior Center is great and we look to continue our membership of over 500. All this would not be possible if it weren't for the many volunteers needed each day to keep things humming around here. Volunteers make this a wonderful, fun experience. We Thank You and our City staff who put it all together and make it work, WE are headed for 20 years in this building Respectfully Submitted, Charter Member, Margo Danner. 1 o I Unisys I 1 \ LAND WITHIN 3 VERTICAL i FEET OF 100 YR. We thought, "We'll probably like Cara." She started right in, learning our names, asking what we'd like from her, and planning nice things for us. We thought, "We like Cara." Time went by and she amazed us. We had programs and day trips and guests. We thought, "We like what Cara is doing for us." She sometimes seemed worried that she'd forget something we wanted from her. She'd say, "Send me an E-mail." And we liked that Cara wants to please us. Then we discovered her passion for cameras and pictures and we often got caught unaware. We realized, "Cara can be a bit sneaky." .But she puts all those pictures into wonderful shows, to honor us and our work. And we appreciate that Cara praises us this way. When the room needs a special set-up, she knows how to achieve that. When we'd like a guest from the city, she knows just the right person to call. When we need information from other senior groups, she has the numbers we need. We see how connected Cara is! She talks of Dave, and Anna, and Ben, but she talks of our families, too. She laughs with us and she's cried with us and we see how caring Cara is! She wears fun outfits and shoes and usually some "bling." She enjoys cooking and she's good at it. She's also the only person we know who has her very own whipped cream maker. We notice how unique Cara is! She has a bag. It's full of stuff: brochures, registrations, receipts, and notes. She works in our closet to make room for everything. We say, "How organized Cara is!" She made up games for us, dug up puzzles for us, made sure there were prizes for us, planned parties and celebrations, and we thought, "How creative Cara is!" By the time she'd been with us for a few years, we knew she was the backbone of the Eagan Seniors, the glue that held us together and made the organization work so well. We realized that we love Cara. It's hard to say "Good-bye" to her now. Change is always difficult and she has meant so much to us, we know that we'll miss Cara! So, Cara, as you leave the group, it's our turn to honor you. We give you our love and best wishes. God bless you, keep you safe, and bring you to see us whenever you can. You'll always be welcome in the Lone Oak Room, for in many ways it's as much yours as it is ours, and we thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us. l ID o , rn[rq ,-3n --, r uq w Z A ¢w 7cD ~ now . n o W iy ` Sv c a' (D w , `° ~ O p ' , x '* CO ' P O Sy Ci w ' O rt ,. 0 K x w ((D O ° m n O O -n ram" Cp O' Cp CD~- a . n ... \ rt p• O r ' ~ a C cn N p ° O cn , 'U CD CD ~ rn Z H rt y ` l w . v' o o rt' va w Cq C1 0' o q Cl) ° D w o• ccD o E"> ¢, Z "' R 'o CD p7 t3• ' ` "* <!• fQ VJ N O • 'rt cn e-h '.Z' O •-'• CD N o (D - rrtr N ice-'• b py y !' rn G p ni ¢, y' „' '3'' CD CD ° ti4 CAD 'C ".' ' En '.7 fD CD '•- .3• C MA i ram+ rr Sy „fD„j p CD nt m p= CD A. Communication a) Committee Chairs are encouraged to schedule activities at least two months in advance, give the information to the Senior Program Development Chair, Co -Chair or Cathy and to be sure the information is very specific. 2. The Lone Oak Room will be able to host a variety -of scheduled special events, like a craft sale. Further discussions are needed to determine how frequently the group would like to see things like this as well as financial logistics. 3. Coffee Administration in the Lone Oak Room a. The Senior Program Development Committee met with Parks and Recreation Director, Ken Vraa, at the last meeting. As a result, Mr. Vraa will suggest to the Operations Committee for the Community Center that the Senior Program Development Committee will be able to administer the coffee operations in the Lone Oak Room. This would include maintenance and finances for the operation. Notable & Newsworthy Minutes Eagan Seniors Wednesday, June 4, 2003 1. Committee Reports Overall Comments — please remember that the committee chairs and members are responsible for coordinating activities and making sure that someone is in attendance to lead the activities. It does not mean they will be there each time. They have worked very hard to develop a great number of opportunities for the Lone Oak Room and any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated! Committee Chairs interested in purchasing equipment and supplies should put together a list of the supplies they are interested in purchasing and the approximate cost of those items and submit to Cathy Bolduc. It will then be determined if the supplies can be purchased through Parks and Recreation or if the group should consider a committee fee to cover expenses. a) Cards & Games — this group has been very active planning activities. They are beginning bingo on Fridays. They would like to have some additional tables that would be easier for card playing. b) Book Club — this group has also begun with a bang. They had their first discussion and have decided on the next book. They will also continue to take books for the lending library — non -smelly and in good condition. Once you have signed up, you are responsible for finding your own substitution. A log book is at the desk for recording any concerns or items the next staff person should be aware of. On July 9 there will be a volunteer training session to update and improve the service provided. 2. Survey Lists — The lists of people interested in helping with the senior program were handed out. Many people expressed interest in offering their time in a variety of areas. Committees should plan to contact people on their lists to inquire about their interests. Special Events Planning — a great suggestion prompted the group to begin thinking about special events throughout the year — craft sales, card tournaments and other special events need to be planned several months out. Any ideas for the 2003/04 year should be given to Cathy or any member of the senior program development team. c. Finances & Membership Fees — this is a very large and difficult area. It involves ideas surrounding the seniors developing their own bank account, what programs and dollars should go into and out of that account, how would membership fees be worked into it, and more. The program development committee continues to work on this and begin to identify who does what, etc. d. Volunteer Training II — a second training session has been set for July 9 to go over new information and discuss any challenging areas. e. "They've been wanting to have a regular place to meet since before the referendum [for the Community Center]." Margo Danner, an Eagan resident who has been actively involved with senior issues, agreed. "When they were planning the Community Center, the seniors said, `Now's the time,"' she said. "We should- n't have to be going to Lakeville and Burnsville. With the opening of the Lone Oak Room, seniors will have a regular meeting place with activities geared specifi- cally toward them. The senior center will allow the city to expand and increase its offerings to sen- iors, said Jeff Asfahl, superin- tendent of the Parks and Recreation Department. "The opportunities avail- able for seniors have been increasing over the last few years, but now with the avail- ability of this, things are real- ly going to flourish;" he said. The Wednesday morning group, now they'll be called the Lone Oak Rockers, will continue, but several new clubs are also forming. Regular activities will now be offered, such as cards and games, crafts, history and scrapbooking and quilting. Bolduc said that seniors are sometimes hard to plan for because they cover a wide range of ages. "When you talk about sen- iors, you're basically talking about three generations of people," she said. "So trying to program for all of them is a challenge, but a very fun chal- lenge." That's why input from sen- iors in the community is so important, she said. "I rely very heavily on feedback from seniors when programming," she said. "There's no way for me to say, `Here's what you want to do.' I need to hear from them, and I think that's key." Bolduc has also been get- ting help from the Senior Program Development Team, a team of eight seniors who have been working to prepare and schedule for the Lone Oak Room. "They've been involved in deciding things from fabrics for the furnishings to when the card group will meet. They've been really putting a lot of work into the development of the program for the Lone Oa' Room," Bolduc said. The Lone Oak Room i, located on the first floor of the Community Center and has G kitchenette, bathroom and fireplace. "It has a phenomenal view," Bolduc said. "It over- looks the patio, and beyond that is the pond. It's got a cozy, homey feeling." Initially, the room will only be open when activities are planned, but eventually it might be open on a daily basis for seniors to just come and hang out, Bolduc said. Danner said after two years of waiting for the Community Center to be built, it's exciting that seniors finally have a common meeting place. "When you retire, you aren't at work where you talk to other people every day. It can get kind of lonely if you don't get out and mingle with other people," she said. "That's what the senior center is all about — being able to talk to people your own age who are going through the same things." Eagan's senior popuiau- lduc said. "I thought we were going to get summer, but those particular days we had bad weather. It was very cold. We had these winds, and on that day it was colder there than in Minnesota," he said. When they arrived in Panuco, he said, they found themselves in the middle of an unexpected Carnival celebration. "They have Carnival at a dif- ferent time than in New Orleans, so we had trouble getting to the hotel," he said. "And we could not sleep." They woke at 5 a.m. the next morning and headed to the river. They had packed a tent and dried food in case they didn't make "There are no rapids. it's just a flat river, so it was very hard," he said. "We were going to stop in one place to camp, and later on we learned that that place had alligators. Alligators don't usual- ly live in the river, but in lakes and lagoons. But sometimes they come into the river." They ended up completing the trip in 10 hours, he said, which probably was much longer than it took his ancestors. "The last three hours we had very strong winds and waves of about 2 feet," he said. "The waves were coming into the kayak. It was very scary." Even though he's an avid kayaker, the 10-hour trip was still a challenge. "We were really tired, and not only because it was 10 hours, but because of the strong winds," he said. "But the people were so °`VVa INJUIL s2500 — I Etienne is no stranger to adventure. He was born and raised in Tampico, Mexico, but has also lived in France, Germany and several states in America. He has completed many kayaking trips, and in 1988 he helped rescue baby green turtles after an oil spill in Mexico. "The crude oil was coming to the shores, so the little turtles had absolutely no chance of sur- viving," he said. "We took all the little turtles and put them back in the sea so they would survive. I was so pleased to hear when I went back this time that they had 1,800 turtles, up from about 300. " Etienne eventually settled in Minnesota because of his wife, whom he met while on a camp- ing trip in Mexico. "My wife is from Fargo, and her family moved to Minneapolis, so that is why we A/C, CD PLAYER, PWR. We don't think we'll ever move," he said. And he swears he doesn't miss the warm, tropical weather of Mexico. "We have the four seasons here," he said. "I really think that if Vivaldi were alive, he would come here to live in Minnesota. The landscape in Tampico is beautiful. It's tropical. But it never changes." After completing the trip, Etienne said he feels more of a connection to his ancestors. "I have a little more respect for early settlers," he said. "Every time you hear about your ancestor's doing something you think, `That wasn't really hard.' But we realized it was very, very hard." Etienne said the trip made him realize how, 200 years ago, people had to do a lot more physical exercise. "I would recommend this for everybody," he said. "You should do at least once in your life do something that your ancestors did, something physi- cal." His brother, however, didn't share his enthusiasm for the gru- eling trip. "He told me I was going to die, because of the waves and the alligators," he said. "And I told him, I want to die doing something fun. I don't want to die at a hospital, I want to die by a lake by a park, doing some- thing fun." But he did survive the trip, he said, and is now busy writing a book and planning his next adventure. "By no means do we want to be isolated in that space. They're an important part of the community." In past years, activities for seniors have been sporadic at best, with no central meeting place. Programs at Oak Woods of Eagan, O'Leary Manor and the McDonald's of Eagan Club have been around for Several years, but did not offer pro- grams on a weekly basis. . In 2001, the city designated Wednesday allornings as a time for seniors to gather in the Community Room at City Hall. Participants would gettogether for card games, crafts and cof- fee from 9 a.m. to noon. [n additioll, the city offered some trips and planned activities for seniors. But it has been an important goal for the city to have a place specifically for seniors, espe- cially with the steady increase in Eagan's senior population, Bolduc said.
