BOX 21199 BEA BLOMQUIST EAGAN, MINNESOTA 55121 Mayor PHONE: (612) 454-8100 THOMAS EGAN JAMES A. SMITH JERRY THOMAS THEODORE WACHTER Council Members THOMAS HEDGES FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE City Administrator EUGENE VAN OVERBEKE City Clerk "Organizing a community turkey roast picnic that will feed 2000 to 3000 people is an experience that I certainly will never forget," said Larry Wenzel, Chairperson of the Eagan 125th Birthday Celebration Committee. "In fact, residents may find that the set-up and roasting of the turkeys may be almost as fascinating as the meat will be delicious." According to Wenzel, ninety (that's right, ninety) specially prepared turkeys will be individually placed onto a giant roasting spit beginning about 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6. The process of mounting the turkeys is expected to take two to three hours. Then the birds will be roasted over charcoal in a special giant oven until completely done. The turkeys have been purchased from the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association which has raised, prepared and seasoned them for this event. These turkeys are not available for sale in any store. "Because the birds are specifically prepared for and roasted in the Turkey Growers' own cooking equipment, the meat is very tasty and moist, " said Wenzel. No barbeque sauce is used. THE LONE OAK TREE ...THE SYMBOL OF STRENGTH AND GROWTH IN OUR COMMUNITY News Release (Continued) - 2 Wenzel also said that the committee had gotten the idea for the turkey roast from members who had attended identical roasts sponsored by the Mendota Heights Lions Club. Since the organization is not hosting a roast of their own this year, their members have been guiding the Eagan committee. "Everyone who has attended a roast in Mendota Heights knows how delicious the turkey meat is," related Wenzel, "and everyone who hasn't should come to our roast or they'll miss an extra special meal." In addition to the turkey, the meal will include cole slaw, rolls, relishes, a beverage and a piece of Eagan birthday cake. The price of the meal is $4.50 for adults and $2.25 for children under 10. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Eagan Municipal Center or from any member of the City Celebration Committee. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the roast on July 6. Meals will be served from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rahn Park. Seating will be provided in the form of the picnic tables under a large tent. Following the roast at 8:00, the Eclectic Company will entertain, and at 9:00 the Mayor and City Council will present awards. A fireworks display is planned for approximately 10:00 P.M. A carnival and other traditional Fourth of July boothes will operate throughout the day. For further information, contact the Eagan Municipal Center, 454-8100. -30- 6/19/85 Contact: Holly Duffy
