ASSIGNMENT Ulteig Engineers, Inc. (UEi) has been retained to provide a structural engineering review of a proposed header over a new window opening located at 2029 Bluestone Lane in Eagan, MN, as directed by Kevin Morin of Renewal by Anderson. BACKGROUND The homeowner is proposing to replace two existing windows with one larger window. A new header will need to be placed above this location to span full length over this new window. The City of Eagan is requesting an independent structural engineering review of this condition. DESCRIPTION The existing house is a two-story wood-framed structure with a slab-on-grade attached garage. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER OCT-29-2003 16:31- ULTEIG MPLS 7635711168 P.03i04 f Renewal by Anderson October 8, 2003 Page 2 OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS 1. The following information was provided by Kevin Morin of Renewal by Anderson: a. The existing header is a (2) 2 x 6 with plywood sandwiched between members. b. The header location has a maximum depth of 8'h inches. C, The existing header is directly below a (2) 2 x 4 top plates. d. The proposed rough opening is 115 inches. e. 2 x 8 lumber floor joists span approximately fourteen feet to this header and cantilever an additional two feet beyond. f. A hip roof system bears on a second floor window header directly above this proposed opening. A portion of this roof load will be transferred to the proposed header below. g. A 2 x 4 bearing stud exists at each end of the proposed opening. h. The bottom of the header is approximately 90 inches above the main floor elevation. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS 2. A structural engineering analysis of this header and opening was performed and the following information is noted: a. The new header is to be a (2) 1 V x 8%a" LVL. Two 9%" deep or larger LVL's will need to be cut down to create this depth. b. The existing 2 x 4 bearing stud is structurally adequate to support the design loads. The contractor is to verify that solid blocking exists beneath these studs to the foundation. C. The existing (2) top plate is to be cut and removed to allow for the required depth of the LVL To maintain continuity of the structure, Simpson ST2122 straps with (16) 16d nails per strap are to be installed between the existing top plates and new header at each end. Thus a total of (2) straps are required. tf"the (2~ tap plate ~dc not require cutting for the LVL depth, the straps are not required. d. To connect each floor joist to the header, ensure solid bearing between members and provide (2) 16d toenail per foist. e. Adequate shoring is the responsibility of the contractor. PROFESSIONAL OPINION 3_ It is my professional engineering opinion that the proposed header construction is structurally adequate and meets the requirements of the Code provided the above notes are followed. OCT-29-2003 16:31 ULTEIG MPLS 7635711168 P.04i04 Renewal by Anderson October 8, 2003 Page 3 GENERAL 4. The observations and opinions expressed in this report were based on my professional engineering judgment and professional practice. 5. No other engineering was performed or requested for this project. 6. All construction is to be done in accordance with standard industry practice and the requirements of the Code.
