FORAY P?. ?r?? ?. i{ !4 _ WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER AN ANSUL SPA-50 SYSTEM? Nearly every industry, large and small, experiences sOme typ6 of fire every year. Most start out small and are quickly extinguished. , But many occur in high hazard, difficul4to-protect areas. These are not quickly extinguished! They may involve flammable liquids, grease and gases; wood and paper; energized elecVical equip- ment; or maybe all three classes of fire. A fire may start when no • one is around - after hours. Then what? The result is all too often a disastrous fire which spreads to other areas, other machines, offices, equipment, other buildings Pro- duction is disrupted, jobs lost, people injured - maybe very seriously. A destructive and costly waste that could have been prevented. For over 40 years, Ansul has been preventing this kind of waste. From pioneering the modern-day dry chemical fire extinguisher to innovations in all major areas of fire protection, Ansul has gained world-wide respect as a leader in ihe field. And our new SPA-50 Industrial Fire Suppression System follows in that tradition. It is a complete, automatw deteCtion, control and fire suppression system that can be installed in more fire hazards using fewer nozzles than any system of its kind. WHAT COMPONENTS MAKE UP AN ANSUL SPA-50 5YSTEM? The SPA-50 is a pre-engineered system divided into three compo. nent groups. 1. Electronic Detection and Control. This group consists of an AUTOPULSE Control Panel which is connected to the detec- tors to automatically perform system actuation and any desired control functions such as alarms, door closures or ventilation shut down. The conirol panel provides circuit supervision and emergency battery back-up making the SPA-50 a completely automatic, 24-hour-a-day sysfem. Op- tional fuse link detection is also available. 2. Agent Storage Tank and Actuator. Fifty pounds (22.6 kg) of Ansul FORAY dry chemical is stored at 360 p s.i. (2481 kPa) at 70 ° F(21 °C) in an ASME and DOT approved pressure vessel manufactured by Ansul. The actuatora[op the tank valve releases the dry chemical agent upon an electric signal from the control panel. 3. Agent Distribution Network - Ansul FORAY is a free-flowing dry chemical. When released from the storege tank, it flows through the piping, out of the special noules and onto the fire. Other optional methods of actuation are available including manuallelectric and pull station with pneumatic cartridge. u w 1 - - -? lt I €I'r? I " - W HAT ARE THE METHODS OF APPLICATION? There are three basic application methods for dry chemical piped systems. total flooding, loCal application - tankside, and local application - overhead. Hazard characteristics will determine which method is most appropriate. 0 Total Flooding. Total flooding is based on the concept of "volume protection" and involves dispersion of dry Chemical throughout the enclosed volume, creating an atmosphere which inhibits Combustion. This method is used when the hazard is entirely enclosed within a room or building. It is well suited for such hazards as storage, fabrication, or mix- in3g rooms, ovens and duct work of up to 3,000 cu. ft. (84.9 m) 2. Local Application - Overhead. Local Application - overhead is based on "area protection" where the dry chemical is applied to specific hazard areas from nozzles mounted overhead. The hazard may be located in a large room or builtling where total flooding application is inap- propriate. Overhead application i5 especially effective on such hazards as dip tanks, drain boards, quench tanks, pipe coating, manufacturing eqwpment and wax coaters of up to 80 sq. ft. (7.4 m2). • Local Application - Tankside. Local Application - tankside is also based on "area protection" but ihe dry chemical is applied in a horizontal direction over the fire sur- face The nozzles are mounted above the liquid surfaCe to minimize liquid splashing and to cover the complete surface of the tank. Tankside application is used for such hazards as dip tanks. drain boards, quench tanks or floor areas under machinery of up l0 120 sq. ft. (11.1 m2). 4V Application Method Ansul SPA-50 Fire Suppression Capability 1 Nozzle 2 Nozzles 4 Nozzles Total Flooding 1,728 cu. ft. 2,400 cu. ft. 3,000 cu. ft.
