At the request of Stocker Excavating, a site visit was made on
October 4, 2007 at 3:17 P.M. to evaluate and test subgrade soils for
the for construction of a single family residence.
At the time of the inspection, the proposed foundation area for the
house and garage, had been fully excavated consistent with proposed
tooting elevations. A crushed limestone aggregate had been olaced at
the base of the excavation within the house and garage, although
cleared from the base of the proposed footing lines. The referenced
aggregate remained at footing elevation within the northwest section
of the garage, where surface soi2s were wet and isolated areas of
standing water were present. At the time of the inspection, footing
forms had been plaaed, configured at an average width of 18" to 19"
by 9" in depth.
Soils at the base of the excavation consisted primarily of a slightly
plastic laamy sand, wi.th a increase in cohesive rnaterials observed at
the east footing Iine of the house and isolated areas in the west.
Soil moisture within the excavation was generally moist to damp,
with the exception of the previously referenced northwest sections
of the house ancl garage excavation, where water was present at
footing elevation or'just below the base of the excavation.
To assess the strength of the soils, a 5/8th inch diameter smooth
probe was used to penetrate the soils at random along proposed footing
lines of the house and garage. with full body weight applied, the
probes indicated relati.vely uniform consolidation, with penetratian
averaging 5", with the excention of areas of the east house footing
line, where areas of cohesive soils and elevated moisture, indicated a
moderate increase in penetration.
To evaluate the relative loadbearing capacity of the soils, three
dynamic cone penetrqrrieter tests were conducted within the footing
lines at random, or in areas indicati.ng a increase in probe
penetration. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), employs a eight
kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical

point a,nto the soil, with the penetration recorded in millimeters per
blow. From the IICP readings, a per b].ow, penetration average was
recorded and a N-value derived. This N-value, is an empirical
relationship we have established to equate tha dynamic cone data to
the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil
boring test.

observations and subsequent soil evaluati.on on this date i.s limited in
scope to soil conditions observed within the foundation excavation,
and to the depths achieved Hy shallow probes and dynamic cone
penetrometer tests. we therefare, are unable to assess subgrade sails
at an elevatinn which may be encountered by borings conducted aspart
of a standard subsurface aeotechnical investigation.
