Subject: Explanation of Installation
In regards to the installation of the doors and/or drip cap flashing at 1239 East Balsam Trail, Eagan, I installed it as
follows. The existing structure has %" Grooved Cedar Siding. When we installed the Richlin vinyl doors, they had
nail flanges on them. Therefore, in order for us to properly install the doors, and adequately flash them, we cut
the grooved siding all the way around the door opening. This ensured that we would be installing the door against
the sheathing (not the siding.) We did put silicone behind the nailing flanges on 3 sides, as per usual and installed
flexible window tape on the sills. We then installed the door as we normally would. Once the door was installed, I
placed a piece of drip cap on the top of the door, and put window tape over the top of the drip cap and against
the sheathing of the house. Due to the fact that we had cut the siding in place to allow for the nailing flanges, we
then placed a piece of 7/8" drip cap up under the siding and under the felt that was used as housewrap (originally
installed.) We then placed a %" cedar filler (approximately 1x4 cedar board) that fit tight up under the 7/8" drip
cap (that extends up under the grooved siding) and down over the top of the drip cap that runs over the door. To
complete the installation process, we simply installed 1x4 cedar boards on the sides of the door (to cosmetically
cover the nailing flange,) then we installed a 1x6 cedar board over the top of the drip cap, cedar filler board and
the top edge of the grooved siding. This top board is only there so that it covers the top edge of the siding, this
way any imperfections in the cut were hidden to the homeowner.
In my opinion, this was our best solution to ensure that water shed properly and the customer was happy with
the look of it. The grooved siding really throws a wrench into things, because the grooves (or dados) let water run
down them. That is why we knew it was absolutely vital that the drip cap is run up underneath the siding, so that
any water that runs down through the grooves, will shed out. We basically put the siding on first to shed water,
and then simply placed the cedar boards over the top to give it the same look as the rest of the windows in the
house. The trim boards are only meant for cosmetics. I would be happy to discuss the methods we took in greater
