Re: Drainage/Sediment Problem at 3648 Ashbury Road
Dave Johnson Property
Mr. Johnson telephoned our office on May 1, 1990 to report a re-
curring drainage/sediment problem for his property.
I inspected the above property on the afternoons of May 8 and
May 14, 1990. I observed that some repair work and interim
erosion and sediment control measures have been undertaken.
I further observed that the majority of this problem is caused
by the discharge of water collected from the lot above and be-
hind Mr. Johnson's property. Water discharged to the slope be-
hind Mr. Johnson's property has caused serious erosion and sub-
sequent deposition of sediment at the toe of the slope.
I have met with Mr. Johnson and advised him as to some of the
methods through which he may be able to mitigate the problem.

Dear Mr. Johnson:
The following is a list of drainage control methods, and erosion/sediment
control practices which may be implemented in addressing your problem.
1. The most important factor in the stabilization of the slope is
the establishment of permanent turf ground cover. I am further
researching the seed types and amounts appropriate for applica-
tion on your neighbors slope. I will inform you of my findings
if I discover a more optimum mixture for this application. '
2. Application of a cobble-gravel filter berm at the point where
water is discharged at the top of the slope will reduce the
velocity and therefore the erosive capacity of water flowing
over the slope.
3. Placement of silt fence on the slope itself to control flow
and shorten flow lengths. The silt fence should be removed
once turf is established.
4. Another, more costly, option would be to attempt to retain the
water at the top of the slope where it could then be collected
into a drain pipe, which could be discharged below the toe of
the slope.
5. Placement of a modified filter trench at the back bound of your
property would help to ensure your property against excess run-
off in the future. Such a trench could be placed after the
slope has become stabilized, since heavy sediment loads would
clog this system. Yau may decide that such a system is unneces-
sary if you feel your yard will drain adequately without it.
Copies of diagrams for the design and placement of some of the above tech-
niques are enclosed. Thank you for the pictures you sent us in regard to
