As to the Department of Parks and Recreation, at the time of the review for the Chatterton Ponds Addition, the Advisory Parks and Recreation Commission discussed the feasibility of extending the bituminous trail, now contained within the Hilltop Estates Addition and next the Mooney Lake, to the west and along the entire shore line/boundaries of the Chatterton Ponds Addition. The intent being that this would provide a link to what would one day be a continuous loop completely around Mooney Lake. However, the Commission determined that such a trail would be very difficult and costly to do because of topography, pond elevation, property ownership and loss of tree massing. What was eventually agreed to by the Advisory Commission was to simply provide a trail connection from Chatterton Court to the existing trail now in place. The trail was to be placed on top of the utility and drainage easement required to handle storm water from this development to Mooney Lake. The trail would connect to the existing trail allowing residents of Chatterton Addition access to the park/lake area. As I recall, the developer was very concerned with the location of the trail wanting to minimize the amount of disruption and tree loss. The City was in agreement with this. Rather than have a separate trail easement, which is often the case with most developments, the City allowed the trail to be moved from the original alignment to that of being on top of the drainage easement. Again, in concert with the developer and with the intent of trying to reduce and minimize tree loss. The Department of Parks and Recreation did remove a number of dead trees along the south shore of Mooney Lake this past winter. This was done at the request of homeowners who had asked the City to remove many of the dead trees. Letters were sent to affected property owners advising them of the pending work, instructing them to call if there were concerns or objections. The Department received none and proceeded with the dead tree removal. Because we were dealing with the directly affected property owners, who both requested and were advised of the tree removal, it was felt that the City was meeting THE LONE OAK TREE ...THE SYMBOL OF STRENGTH AND GROWTH IN OUR COMMUNITY the concerns and wishes of park neighbors. We regret that this tree cutting may have reduced the visual attractiveness of the park from your home. As you are aware, the City has met with the immediate residents of the park and taken under consideration their suggestions for increasing the pond level. Engineering has undertaken the review of ponding area requirements and a number of alternatives that are anticipated to be reviewed in July.
