Our services consisted of the following: • Ezcavation Observations • Compaction Testing • Testing of cast-in-place concrete for footings, slab-on-grade and walls • Observations of concrete reinforcement • Test roll observations of Pazking and Drive azeas These services were provided by an engineering assistant, a senior engineering assistant or an International Coaference of Building Officials (ICBO) certified special inspector under the direction of a registered professional engineer for the State of Minnesota. Purpuse The purpose of the excavazion observations was to assist in evaluating the soll exposed in the bottom of the excavation for their similazity to those encountered in the soil borings and suitability for support of the anticipated fill and foundation loads. The purpose of the compaction testing was to assist in evaluating the compaction procedures being used by the conuactor and to determine if the fill placed met the project compaction requiremenu. The purpose of the concrete testing was to determine the slump and air content of the fresh concrete and to cast cylinders for compressive strength testing in the laboratory foc conformance to the projecYs specificatioos. 'Ihe purpose of the reinforcement observatioas was to determine if the reinforcement was placed in geaeral accordance with the available plans and specifications. These observations were done under the guidelines of the Uniform Building Code (UBC) Section 306, "Special Inspecxions Under the D'uection of an ICBO Certified Inspector for Reinforced Concrete". When completed, a copy of the report was givea to the contractor for their field files. Copies of these reports are included with this report for your review and records. Available Information Braun Intertec Corporation (Braun Intertec) previously performed a geotechnical evaluation at this site. T'he results of the evaluation aze summarized in our report BODX-97-029, dated Mazch 10, 1997, to Mr. Mazk A. Boxey of Penske Truck Leasing. Proposed Construction The buIlding is a slab-on-grade, single-story structuze with a mezzanine. The building is supported on a typical spread footing foundazioa designed to exert a maximum soil bearing pressure of 3,000 pounds per squaze foot (psfl. We understand the finished floor grade will be 897 feet. Excavation Observations The building pad aad pump isiand excavation observations were coaducced by an engineering assistant. Random, shallow (about 3 feet deep) hand auger probes were used to assist in evatuating ihe excavation bottom soils. Estimates of the soil consisteacy or density were based on the peaetration and turning resistances of the hand auger probes. Soil ciassifications were determined with American Society for Tesring and Materials (ASTK procedures by observing the hand auger probe cuttings. The hand auger probes performed in the building pad and pump island excavation bottoms typically encountered silt with sand and lean clay. The silt with sand was judged to be ia a medium dense condition and the lean c(ay in a rather stiff condition. Groundwater was not eacountered during the excavation observations. The building pad excavation bottom elevations ranged from 881 feet at the norrh ead of the excavation to 893 feet at the south end of the excavation. Approzimately 10 to 13 feet of oversizing was provided. The pump island footing excavation bottom elevation was approzimately 892 feet. Approzimateiy 3 feet of oversizing was provided. Canclusions Based on the results of the soil borings, excavation observations and hand auger probes, it is our opinion the silt with sand and lean.clay encountered in.the excavation.botioms aze adequate for fill and foundation support. Based on the construction staking provided by others, it appears the ezcavations were adequazely oversized. ? Penske Truck Leasing ' Projecc BODX-97-150C January 13, 1998 Page 3 Compac[ion Testing A total of 17 compaction tests and 5 retests were performed in the fill placed for footing and floor slab support and foundation wall backfill. A total oF 15 compaction tesu and 3 retesu were performed for utiliry uench backhll. A total of 3 compaction tesu were performed ro establish grade in the pazking lot.' All tesu and retesu for fill placed below footings mei or exceeded the minimum density requirement of 100 percent of standard Proctor density ,r (ASTM D 698). All tests and retests for fill placed for floor slab support met or exceeded the minimum-deosiry requiremenu of 95 percent. All tesu or retesu for fill piaced for pazking lots and utility trench backfill met or exceeded the minimum compaction requirements. The ezceptions aze tesu 4 aad 6. These failing tests were not retested per the contractor. Results of the compaciion tests and Proctor curves were previously submitted and aze attached to this repoR. Conclusions i ' Based on the resulu of our compaction tesu, the fill placed appears adequate for footing and floor slab support. Concrete Reinforcement Observations Concrete reinforcement observations were performed on an on-call basis during the construction of the building. These observations were performed according to the guidelines of the UBC Section 306, "Special Inspections". Conclasions Based on the resulu of our concrete reinforcement observations, the reinforcement observed was placed in general accordance with the available plans and specifications., Concrefe Testing Nine seu of concrete test cylinders were cast to represent the concrete placed at the site. This testing was done by a Braun Intertec technician who was certified by the.Americaa Concrete Institute (ACn or representatives from Stahl Construction. (Ike-results of thesetesiDke included with this report for your review and reference. ?/dzow ? Conclusions ?Lo/qg In summary, the resulu of the concrete compressive strength tests indicate the concrete placed for rhe building met or exceeded the minimum specified compressive strength. Gylinder Set 8, which was cast on the curb and gutter concrete, was damaged on site and may uot representthe in-place cancrete strength. Parking and Drive Area Ohservations Test roll observations were performed in the pazking and drive azeas with a loaded tandem truck or loaded scraper. We recomamended_ these azeas.be > subcut and replaced with a drier, eompactable soil. I The contractor reworked the unstable azeas and then the areas were test rolled again; a majority of the azeas performed satisfactorily. The temaining uastabie azeas were ? recommended to be subcut approximately 8 inches and repiaced with 3 incN minus rocF. The bituminous base course was placed on October 31, 1997 and we understand the wear course will be placed in 1998.
