On one of their standard house construction drawings, a stair landing exists at the entry from the garage into the house. Refer to Planet plan No. 06-304 for additional information. Previously, CLB has supported one corner of the wood framed stair landing directly on top of the garage slab-on-grade. For a current residence under construction in Eagan, MN, the updated Planco plans show a proposed sono-tube footing at the location of the above noted comer support. This footing was not installed during concrete work and the stair landing is currently framed directly onto the slab. The remainder of the house is complete. The City Building Inspections Department is requesting an engineering opinion of this condition. The following information is noted: 1. The landing shown is approximately 4'-2" x 4'-2" in plan with a small set of stairs down to the slab. The landing framing is reportedly supported on two sides by the adjacent wall and floor framing, which is supported directly on cast-in-place concrete foundations. 2. The design load for the comer slab support is less than 400 lbs. For reference purposes, if the load was supported by a sono-tube footing, an 8" diameter footing would be more than sufficient. A garage slab is intended to support wheel loads of up to 2,0001bs. 3. The existing C slab-on-grade is structurally adequate to support the landing load. 4. In regard to the combined slab and foundation support conditions, there remains a potential for differential movement between these elements. A slab-an-grade is intended to move independently of foundation walls due to either minor settlement of the sub-grade or minor frost heave. Proper sub-grade preparation helps reduce this potential. The proximity to slab ledges and to the heatedhousealso reduces the above concerns. 5. In general, it is standard industry practice to support the bottom end of wood stair stringers from the house down into the garage with the slab-on-grade. Although the addition of a landing increases this loading area, the slab is still capable of providing an adequate support condition. If minor differential movement occurs, the slab will remain structurally adequate to support the above loading and the movement would not affect the adjacent house and wall framing. It is our professional engineering opinion that placement of the come landing support onto the garage slab-on-grade is structurally adequate as noted above.
