We understand your concern abo small animals and children crawling through the casting. We anted to respond to assure you that your concerns have been give serious consideration by the City during the Comprehensive Storm Drainage Plan preparation process and during the construction of the storm sewer system on City Project Number 236A that serves your development. The City allows two types of castings on catch basins located in backyard areas. The enclosed copy of detail plate #203 shows the construction requirements of the beehive catch basin and the ditch grate, stool type catch basin. The catch basins in your backyard were designed and constructed with the ditch grate, stool type casting on both catch basins. The City recommends that the stool type castings that are on the two backyard catch basins are the best application for this area. The catch basins are required to handle a storm water runoff rate of 8 cubic feet per second during a 5 year rainfall event. We feel that the beehive castings on the catch basins would be a potential maintenance problem with leaves, grass clippings and other debris plugging up the casting. It is very important that the catch basins in your backyard do not become plugged because the walkout elevation of the house at 1970 Badger court is only about two feet above the catch basins. The chicken wire has become clogged with debris and has reduced the efficiency of the catch basins. If you know who installed the chicken wire in the catch basins, please ask them to remove it as soon as possible. I hope this helps to provide you with some of the rationale used by the City in designing the storm sewer system.
