The purpose of this letter is to report the findings of a structural engineering review of modifying
an existing foundation for general fireplace venting construction.
ASSIGNMENT
Ulteig Engineers has been retained to provide a structural engineering review of the foundation
opening requirements for the venting ductwork of proposed fireplaces for standard residential
construction as directed by Paul Hanson, of Hearth and Home Technologies.
BACKGROUND
Hearth and Home Technologies installs fireplaces for lower level remodels to existing residences.
As part of the construction, Hearth and Home often vents the fireplace unit out the side of the
existing foundation. The contractor is requesting an independent structural engineering review of
these proposed foundation modifications.
DESCRIPTION
The structures are wood-framed residences with either a concrete masonry block foundation or a
cast-in-place concrete foundation.

OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS
The following information was obtained through conversations with Paul Hanson, the
contractor:
a. The proposed venting ductwork is circular and typically 8" to 10" in diameter.
b. The proposed openings through the foundation are a maximum of 12" in diameter.
Sealing the space between the ductwork and opening is the responsibility of the
contractor.
C. A site specific review was neither performed, nor requested for these projects.
d. The contractor is requesting general guidelines for the proposed foundation
modifications.
STRUCTURAL REVIEW
2. The following information. is, notedlin regard to the proposed foundation modifications to
provide general guidelines for future opening construction.
a. Wood framing that bears over a solid rim joist, as well as floor joists that span into
and are connected to a solid rim, will span beyond the edge of the below foundation
openings, and thus not require additional support at these locations. The main level
floor system immediately supported by the foundation wall is to have a solid rim
joist, which is at a minimum 2 x 8 lumber. A single discontinuity in the rim over the
opening will not affect the ability of this member to cantilever from both sides.
b. The opening through the foundation is to be circular and a maximum of 12 inches in
diameter.
C. To prevent too weak of a section of foundation wall above the opening, the hole is to
either extend to the top of the foundation, or a minimum of 6" of concrete masonry is
to remain after the opening is installed. Cast-in-place concrete foundations may
have a minimum of 3" of solid concrete above the opening.
d. Main level beams and headers supported near the opening are to bear a minimum of
12" from the center of the opening.
e. Outside grade is to be located a minimum of 6" below the bottom of the opening.
f. The opening is not to extend through a grouted and reinforced core of a concrete
masonry block wall..
PROFESSIONAL OPINION
3. It is our professional engineering opinion that:
a. The existing foundations and supported members are not adversely affected by the
proposed noted modifications for general fireplace construction.
