April 12, 2005 Mr. Earl Gebauer Shaw Construction 7685 Corporate Way Eden Prairie, MN 55344 Re: Structural Steel Special Inspection Final Report NWA Federal Credit Union Denmark Avenue Eagan, Minnesota Dear Mr. Gebauer: Project AV-04-06333 Please find attached the Structural Steel Special Inspection Final Report for the NWA Federal Credit Union (Wings Financial) and the supporting Special Inspection Daily Reports for your review and records. Special Inspections and Testing Procedures The special inspection services were provided by International Code Council (ICC) certified special inspectors in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 1700 of the International Building Code (IBC), the Special Inspection and Testing Schedule and the project plans and specifications. The purpose of the special inspection services is to provide a review of the work being performed by the various contractors to determine if the work is being done according to the approved construction documents. The special inspector does not have the responsibility or authority to, nor is it the intent of special inspections to have them, judge or modify the construction documents. Only the structural engineer of record can do this. As the special inspections were completed, a Special Inspection Daily Report was prepared to summarize the result of our inspections and testing. Copies of this report were provided to the site representative of the contractor for his review and records. As part of this report, items needing correction or discrepancies observed from the approved construction documents were noted. Plans and Specifications The approved plans and project documents were used for our inspections throughout the duration of the project. From time to time, we have received plan modifications from the project structural engineer. When received, these have been used to evaluate the work completed in the field. Visual Weld Examinations Visual weld examinations were conducted in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1- 2004, Figure 5.4 and Table 6.1 requirements and the requirements of the project plans and specifications. Providing engineering and environmental solutions since 1957 Shaw Construction Project AV-04-06333 April 12, 2005 Page 2 Bolting Observations Bolting observations were conducted in accordance with the requirements of the project plans and specifications to determine if the boltholes were filled and, if used, the splined end of the tension control bolts were separated from the body of the bolt. Removal of the splined end is a direct indicator the bolt has been torqued to the minimum snap off load. At connections where the splined ends were not removed, or if standard hex-head bolts were used, the torque applied to the bolt by the contractor was determined using a hand-held torque wrench. In addition, each connection was observed for fit-up and to determine if the various plies were in contact with one another. Deck Weld Observations Deck weld observations were conducted in accordance with AWS D1.3-1998, Section 6.1 requirements and the requirements of the project plans and specifications. In addition, the location and the completeness of the side lap fasteners were observed and evaluated. General Services performed by Braun Intertec personnel on this project have been conducted with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this area. No warranty, express or implied, is made. Thank you for the opportunity to provide the special inspection and testing services for this project. After review of the attached Structural Steel Special Inspection Final Report, if you have any questions or require additional information, please call Dan Graham at 952.995.2524 or Mike Heuer at 952.995-2258. Grant e-mail: arlen@mattsonmacdonald.com dateltime: November 29, 2004 1:30 pm job #: 04338.00 weather: Mostly Sunny, 30 degrees Contacted on Site: 1. David, Shaw Construction 2. Jeff, Steel Stud Contractor 3. Tim, Structural Steel Contractor Items Observed: 1. Interference of structural steel column base plate and steel stud shear wall base attachment 2. Interference of night deposit box opening with light gage x strapping. Interference of structural steel canopy beam with light gage x strapping along east elevation. 3. Northam barrel vault roof beam is bearing on 213 of tube calumns. This is structurally acceptable as built 4. The south east canopy structural steel column top plate has been field welded at the north and south sides of column in lieu of boiling. This is structurally acceptable as built. 5. Short W12 beams at sides of northern building recess have been field welded in lieu of bolted. This is structurally acceptable as built. Items Discussed: 1. Structurally acceptable to omit steel stud shear wall base attachment where it interferes with the column base plate and run x strapping past the shear wall jamb and weld to the structural steel column with same weld specified for jamb member. 2. Structurally acceptable to move the and of the shear wall jamb north approximately 8' where It Interferes with the night deposit box rough opening. Structurally acceptable to anchor the light gage x strapping to the top of the adjacent structural steel column in lieu of the light gage jamb where it interferes with the canopy beam. 3. Structurally acceptable to install shear wall base anchors at inside of stud assemblies where door frames will Interfere. 4. Jeff stated that he thought there would be issues with hitting the rebar in the masonry bond beams when installing the anchors at the base of the light gage shear walls. Stmcturelly acceptable to cut the rebar when these bars are intersected. Per later conversation with David, the anchors installation is difficult due to hitting the rebar. Cutting the rebar is difficult and may be cost prohibitive. The steel stud contractor will attempt the installation of more anchors. Final coordination of this will be forthcoming pending input from the Mattson Macdonald, Shaw Construction and the Steel Stud contractor. 5. Discussed structural steel loose brick lintels with David, Jeff and Tim. It appears that all the lintels are on site. 5. Structural steel tube at the front of the entrance tower will be located at the top of the window. The location of the tube will be coordinated directly with the window shop drawings. The landscape plan did not specifically state that irrigation would be provided, although the notes contained a reference to irrigation. Please be sure that irrigation is installed to serve all landscaped areas. The Planned Development Agreement specifies that the building materials must be colors that match those presented to the city Planning Commission on July 27, 2004. While the colors were not listed on the Elevation Plan submitted for the building permit, the building materials and colors are identified on the building elevations plan that is in the exhibits of the Planned Development Agreement, and the building must comply with the Planned Development Agreement. Also, a Site Lighting Plan was not submitted as part of the application for building permit. The Site Lighting Plan is part of the Planned Development Agreement and site lighting must comply with the Planned Development Agreement. If you have any questions, please call me at 651-681-4691.
