A subsurface geotechnical investigation #06006 dated April 3, 2006, as conducted by Allied Test Drilling Company was available for review prior to the inspection. Observations were made within the rear northeast section of the pad where the footing excavation had been lowered to a moist sandy clay to remove a thin topsoil layer and dark horizon "B" soils. To evaluate the strength of the soils, a 5/8 inch diameter smooth probe used to penetrate the subgrade cohesive soils at random. With full body weight applied the soils indicated acceptable capacity. The referenced zone of horizon "B" soil at an average of 18" thick was well consolidated with a organic content below 6 percent. These soils could be considered acceptable for construction based on appropriate bearing capacity. To further evaluate the possibility of stepping up the rear footing to bear on this material, the excavation was extended at footing grade to the SE, following the transisition of the thin top soil layer and the underlying horizon "B" zone. Probes indicated acceptable capacity with a moderate loss in strength within a thin underlying strata of moist clay. The cohesive subgrade soils as noted within the lower NE corner of the pad and soils referenced by the boring report indicate well consolidated soils at depth. To assess the relative loadbearing capacity of the noted soils, dynamic cone penetrometer tests were conducted within the sandy clay at the lower SE corner, and at proposed footing grade within the Horizon "B" zone to the south. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), uses a eight kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with the penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the DCP readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded and a N-value derived. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (EPF) standard penetration Post-0 Fax Note oes?
