The article dealt with the temporary suspension of the contractor's license for Tollefson Builders'. According to this article, the license was suspended until the City Council could review a report of Tollefson Builders' developments in Eagan. Our home is located in Pilot Knob Heights Fourth Addition and is unfortunately a Tollefson home. We have not been contacted by the City to relate our experience with this builder. I am also not aware of any of our neighbors with Tollefson homes that were contacted for this study. I am writing this letter to inform the City of Eagan of our experience with this builder. My wife and I contracted with Carl Tollefson to build our home and we moved into the house in September of 1978. The following is a partial list of the numerous problems we encountered with this builder: 1. In December of 1978, large water spots appeared on the vaulted ceiling. Tollefson was repeatly notified of the problem but did not take action. On March 12, 1979, I sent Tollefson a letter notifying him that none of the funds remaining in escrow would be released until some action was taken regarding the roof problem. Finally, in July of 1979, Tollefson resprayed the ceiling to hide the water stained areas but claimed no further action was necessary. This proved to be only a cosmetic repair. The ceiling problems persisted and in 1982 we hired another contractor to reconstruct the ceiling and insulation at a cost of 23508.00. The contractor that repaired the ceiling discovered Tollefson Builders' had not constructed the original ceiling in accordance with the plans. Since the reconstruction work, the ceiling has never been a problem. In 1983 we sued Tollefson Builders and settled out of court for 21750 to partially compensate us for our loss. 2. Many of the doors, locks, and windows were not properly installed. Doors would not seal properly, locks did not work, and windows would not operate correctly. After page 2 repeated calls the builder finally sent a workman out to attempt to correct some of the problems. Unfortunately, he did more damage than repair. I repaired some of the doors and windows myself and have been forced to live with some of the problems. 3. The driveway and sidewalk cracked and settled within a year of construction.- The house plans specified a concrete apron was to be constructed immediately in front of the garage but Tollefson Builders' omitted it when the driveway was paved. The bituminous in this area broke up and was soon in need of replacement. In summary, I would not recommend Tollefson Builders' to anyone interested in constructing a home. Important details in the house plans were ignored and in my opinion some of the workmanship was substandard. i hope the City Council will give strong making the license suspension permanent. send me copy of the report the Council is Tollefson Builders' or advisee as to where report.
