As requested, a site visit was made or. July 23, 2009 at 9:55 A.M. to
evaluate and test subgrade soils for deck construction at a walkout
single family residence.
At the time of the inspection, 6 cylindrical pier excavations had been
completed at the rear of the residence for the proposed construction.
The excavations at 18" in diameter, averaged 45" to 52" in depth, and
were placed in 3 rows at a maximum distance of approximately 12' from
the structure. It is our understanding that the proposed supporting
elements of the deck, will include treated wood columns bearing on 12"
of concrete placed at the base of the pier excavations.
To evaluate the strength and classification of the soils, a ten foot,
1 5/8th inch diameter fluted haridauger probe was used to penetrate the
subgrade soils below the base of '2 excavations selected at random.
Extracted soils consisted of a slightly silty sandy clay, with
saturated material and standing water present at the surface in some
locations. No organic materials were observed or extracted during
sampling of the excavations.
To assess the relative loadbearing capacity of the subgrade soils,
dynamic cone,penetrometer tests were conducted within 2 pier
excavations. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), employs a eight
kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical
point into the soil with the penetration recorded in millimeters per
blow. From the DCP readings, a per blow, penetration average was
recorded and a N-value derived. This N-value, is an empirical
relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to
the more familiar blows per foot '(BPF) standard penetration soil
boring test.

Based upon our observation and tests, it is our opinion that the
subgrade soils are acceptable for construction, exceeding an assumed
net allowable bearing capacity of 2000 PSF. It is recommended that
the pier excavations be completed to a minimum depth of 48" to
provide proper frost protection-
our observations and subsequent soil evaluation on this date is
limited in scrape to soil conditions observed within the pier
excavations, and to the depths achieved by shallow probes and dynamic
cone penetrometer tests. We therefore, are unable to assess subgrade
soils at depths which may be encountered by borings conducted as part
of a standard subsurface geotechnical investigation.
