RE: Exhaust ducts in the attic space at Woodstone Townhomes
Deaz Sirs:
During a framing inspection at 1488 Deerwood Bend, I wrote a correction notice for the
flex duct used to vent the bathroom exhaust. The flex duct was penetrating the lhr
ceiling and therefore, needs to maintain the lhr rating to the underside of the roof
sheathing.
At that time, I indicated to Dave SYeger, that we might require a lhr shaft huilt azound
that duct to the roof deck but if that changed, I would conYact him. After discussing it
with the senior inspectors, we decided that hazd piping the exhaust ducts throngh the
attic space with 26-gauge metal ducting and sealing the joints with metal tape, would be
adequate. Our decision was based on a similar application used for penetrations
through the lhr sepazation between R-3 and U-1 occupancies. The related code section
is 1997 U.B.C. Section 302.4, Exception 3.
This duct should continue from the under side of the finished ceiling to the under side of
the roof deck. The seams should be sealed and the penetration at the ceiling should be
fire caulked.
