SOIL OBSERVATION AND TESTING
PNTRODUCTION:
This report presents the resulu of our observaNon of soil conditions for the residence at 1203 Duckwood Trail
in Eagan, Minnesota. Our work in the field was authorized by Mr. Mark Rego with McDonald Homes Inc.
on August 30, 1993. Our authorized scope of services was limited to the following:
1. Observe the soils exposed within the mass excavation for the building.
2. Put down shallow hand auger borings to explore the localized subsurface soil conditions.
3. Judge the suitability of the exposed soils for support of the anticipated building loads.
CONCLUSIONS:
The soils exposed in the observed excavation bottom consisted of what appeared to be naturally deposited
clayey or silty sand. Based on our hand auger borings and observations, these soils were judged suitable for
support of the anticipated building loadings.
PRO.TECT INFORMATION:
We understand Ute proposed construcdon will consist of a single-family residence of wood-frame construction.
We understand the lowest basement floor slab will be placed at a elevation 897.83' and the garage slab will
be at elevation 905.50'. We have no informafion regarding the actual foundadon loading which will be exerted
by the msidence on the bearing soils, however, we assume these loadings will be appmximately 1500 psf or
less, as is typical for a normal wood-frame residential construction.
As no deep soil borings were performed within the building azea, we cannot wamant the soil conditions below
depths of our shallow hand auger borings. Although competent soils appear to be present in the eaccavation
bottnm, this does not eliminate the possibility that softer, compressible soils are not present at depth.

SOIL OBSERVATION AND TFSTING
OBSERVATION METHODS AND RFSULTS:
On August 30, 1993, we observed the soils exposed in the mass excavation for the proposed residence. To
aid in depicting localized subsurface soil conditions, several shallow hand auger borings were placed into
underlying soils. The soils exposed and retrieved by our hand auger borings were visually and manually
classified in accordance with ASTM:D2488 and estimates were made of their strength properties.
Soils exposed at the bottom of the excavation consisted primarily of naturally deposited clayey or silty sand
soils. The observed soils appeared W be in a medium stiff or medium dense condition and were judged suitable
for support of the andcipated foundation loadings with the exception of the walkout portion of the south footing
line where we recommended that an addidonal i' of saturated, soft silty material be removed and the footing
stepped down to bear on the underlying competent soils. Also, our hand auger borings in the southeast corner
of the residence revealed the exposed soils to be in a very soft condition to a depth of 3-1/2'. Therefore, we

PRECAUTIONS FOR EXCAVATIIVG AND REFILLING DURING COLD WEATHER
The winter season in this area presents specific probkms for foundation construction. Soils which
are allowed to freeze undergo a moisture volmne expansion, resulting in a loss of density. These
frostcxpanded soiLs will consolidate upon thawing, causing settlement of any structure supported
on them. To prevent this settlement, frost should not be allowed to penetrate into the soils be-
low any proposed structure.
I3eally, winter excavatian should be limited to areas small enough to be refilled to a gade higher
than footing grade on the same day. Typically, these areas should be filled to floor grade;, Trench-
ing irack down to unfrozen soiLs for foundation construction can then be performed just prior to
footing placement. The excavated trenches should be protected from freezing by means of in-
sulating or heating during foundafion construction. Bacld'illing of the foundation trenches should
oe performed immediately after the below-grade foundation construction is finished. In addition,
any interior footings, or footings designed without frost protection should be extended below
frost depth, unless adequate precau6ons are taken to prevent frost intrusion unHl the bui(ding
can be enclosed and heated.
In many cases, final grade cannot be attained in one day's time, even though small areas are work-
ed. In the event final grade cannot be attained in one day's time, frost can be expected to develop
overnight. The depth of frost penehation can be minimized by leaving a layer of toose soi] on top
of the compacted material overnight. However, any frost which fonns in this loose layer, or snow
which accumulates, should be completely removed from the £Il area prior to compacrion and ad-
ditional soil placement. Frozen soils, or soiLs containing frozen material or snow should never be
used as fill material.
After the structure has been enclosed, all floor s1aU areas should be suhjected to ample periods
of heating to allow thawing of the soil system. Alternatively, the frozen soils can be completely
removed and be replaced with an engineered fill. The floor slab areas should be checked at ran-
do.n and representative locations for remnant areas of frost, and density tests should be performed
to document fill compaction prior to slab placement.
Due to the potential probkms associated with fill placement during cold weather, any £Iling
operations should be monitored by a full-time, on-site soils technician. Full-time monitoring
aids in detecting areas of fmun material, or potentisl problems with froun material within
the fill, so that appropriabe measures can be taken. The choice of fill material is particularly
important during cold weather, since clean granular Fill materiaLs can be placed and compacted
more efficiently than silty or clayey soils. In addition, geater :nagnitudes of heaving can be
expected with freezing of the more frost susceptible silts and clays.
