Dear Chris:
As you requested, we have analyzed the dPCking and joists nsed in your prototype deck. The
decking consists of 16 gage metal panels with 1375" flanges and a.586" retum lip. Each
channel is 5.562" wide. My calculations indicate that these panels can comfortably support a
live load of 60 psf at a span of 4'-0" or less.
The standard floor joists are double 2x8s at 24" on center. The wood grade and species is #2
Southern Pine. The allowable spans are 12'4" for a 60 psf live load and 14'-0" for a 40 psf live
load. These spans are governed by live load deflection limits of the span divided by 360. The
joists can also cantilever up to 4'-0" assuming a back span not less than 6'-0". For the
cantilever condition, the back span anchorage must be capable of resiscing an uplift of 125#.
Most standard joist haogers can resist this uplift.

Dear 3hannon:
I've performed the requested calcalations on the ahove referenced systam. The purpose
of these caiculations was to evaiuete the double 2 x 8's which csnrilever 4'-0° with a
back sgan of 6'-0". My caicularioas iruiicate that stresses and deflections are within
acceptable limits for a 60 pef ]ive load. The joists are to be connected at the hoitse with a
meta[ hanger (USP double 2 x 8-10 x 12). This hanger is adeque.te to prevent the joist
from lifting up in the "worst case" condition where there is a full live load on the
cantilever and no 1[ve load on the baok span.
My evaluation of the deck was limited ta these issues. Please give me a call if you have

As requested, a serles of 42" high alkowabie guardrail configurations infilled with Y."
tempered glass or pickets and acceptable guardreil mounting configurations have been
determined and are assembled on pages 23 to 45 inclusive and pages 12 to 17 inclusive
respectively of the American Alco Ventures vsta Aluminum Railing Systems Design
Manual. These configurations are in conformance with the structural load requirements
for balcony guardrails as specified in the following code:
. 2003 Intemational Building Code section 1607.7.1 Handrails and guards
Since these configurations are designed to meet the most stringent applicable
requirements of the above mentioned code, the 42" high allowable guardrail
configurations infilled with '/." tempered glass or pickets and acceptable guardrail
mounting configuratfons referenced above also meet the criteria set out in the 1997
Uniform Building Code and The BOCA National Building Code.

Re: Frost Footing

Dear Nicolas:
As requested, we've reviawed the capacity of your "Frost Footing". This footing consists of a
2W' diacneter g ga. galvanized steel pipe bearing on a 15" diameter concrete pad. Thc concrete
is poured at the bottom of an augured hole at frost depth. The steel pipe has an end plate end is
embedded in the concrete pad.
Our calculations indiaau that the footing capacity is conkolled by bearing stress on tha soi(.
W ith 1500 psf soil, the footing capacity is about 1,800 pounds. By inereasing the diameter of the
concrete pad, the capacity of the footing could be proportionally inereased. For example, a 24"
diemeter p3d would result in a 4700 pound capacity footing. we estimate the capaoity of the pipe
at abaut 8000 pounds which constitutas the upper limit of [he fooYing capacity. Better soils will
also result in a higher capacity footing.
