As requested, a site visit was made on August 30, 2006 at 12:45 P.M.
to evaluate subgrade soils for a garage addition at an existing
single family residence.
At the time of the inspection, a attached garage located the west
side of the residence had been removed with the slab floor
remaining. The proposed construction,zone, adjacent to the rear of
the original garage, had been excavated approximately 3 feet, with a
portion of the east footing at the southeast corner excavated to
approximately S feet. Soils as viewed with the side walls of the
deep footing trench, indicated dark sandy and silt loam fill soils,
Horizon "B" in appearance, possible backfill material placed during
original construction of the residence. The material appeared well
consolidated, with no vegetation or dectectable organic odors.
A 5/8" diameter smooth probe used to penetrate the trench side
walls approximately 3 feet below proposed grade, indicated
acceptable soil strength, with a moderate increase in penetration
at the interior wall (slab area) where a increase in soil moisture
was observed. Soil at the base of the trench consisted of a moist
natural sandy clay, with probe penetration indicating acceptable
strength. A 3 foot test pit excavated near the mid-point and
outside of the rear footing line, indicated a dry firm silty loam,
capable of supporting full body weight, with minimal penetration, on
the 5/8" diameter probe. .
To evaluate the relative loadbearing capacity of the subgrade soils,
dynamic cone penetrometer tests were conducted within the fill
zone, adjacent to or within the proposed footing lines. The dynamic
cone penetrnmeter (DCP), uses a eight kilogram (I7.6 pound) hammer
to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with
the penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the DCP
readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded and a N-value
derived. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have
established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar

blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test.

The referenced fill soils as observed within the proposed
construction zone appear to exhibit acceptable soil composition and
strength for construction. The contractor may therefore provide a
stepped footing from the deep footing on natural soils at the east
line, to provide bearing on fill soils within the remaining sections
of the structure. Also, the proposed 24" spread footing design is
considered acceptable, based on the estimated bearing capacity of
the observed soils.
