Systems Dear Sirs: In response to the request of Mr. Jack Poppler, I have reviewed the submitted construction guide and the calculations and tests for ENERCEPT BLDG. SYSTEMS. As a result of that review I have attached rty seal of registration to the enclosed CERTIFICATION. In reviewing the total structure, as per drawing and calculations made available, it is apparent that the geometry, construction and energy conservation of the completed structure as proposed for prefabricated residential construction is quite unique and will provide specific struc- tural advantages. The structure should prove to be very stable as the actual horizontal and vertical moments, shears and deflections of the various components will be minimal because of horizontal resistance of adjacent units tending to "squeeze" the structure together. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely , . <rc .E. Chester . imniewi Civil a Structural Eng. Reg. No. 4832 CJZ:ch encl. Itnese ests, full-size panels are nailed onto lumber frames, wery. much as they would be in normal applications, and they are then subjected to stresses;, which tend to replicate in-service stresses. Thus, uniform load tests measure the effeet of ' snow and wind loads; racking tests measure the effect of uvind loads; concentrated and ?. impact load tests evaluate the effect of punctual loads such as applied by footsteps or furniture legs. NORBORD panels have been found to meet or exceed the requirements of the major building codes for roof sheathing, wall sheathing and subfloor applications. .. ..... _. ...«.,_? ,.....:.,..-. Particlehoard is manufactured in both 4 and 6-foot widths and wider, although for induatrial sales much is cut to size for the purchaser. In construc- tion, the common size panel ia 4 by 8 feet, as for other panel materiale. The usea Yor particleboard are atill develop- ing, but the main ones paralle] those for lum- ber core in veneered or overlaid, construction and PlSK'ood. The two properties of particle- board that have the greatest positive influence on its eelection for a use are (1) uniform aur- face and (2) that the panel stays flat as manu- factured, particularly in applications where edges are not fastened to a rigid framework. For the majority of uses where exposures are interior or eciuivalent (furniture, cabinet- work, interior doors, and most ftoor underlay- ment), urea-formaldehyde resina are used. Boarda with that kind of bond are classed as type 1 in specifications. Where greater resis- tance to heat, moisture, or a combination of heat and moisture is required, type 2 boards generally bonded with phenolic resin are re- ullired. i general, particleboards are manufactured in about the same thickneases as softwood plywood; most manufacture ia in thicknesses between '/> and 1 inch, although there are notable use developments for particleboard thinner than 1/2 inch and thicker than 1 inch. Much extruded particleboard is of the "fluted" kind in thicknesaes that satiafy the need for cores for fluah doors. S'imilarly low- density, mat-formed particleboard is raanu- factured for solid core doora in thicknesaea so that, when facings are aPplied, final door thick- nesses are the standard 1g/a and 1% inches. While particleboard manufacturers formerly concentrated production in thick boarda, there has been a decided trend toward thinner prod- ucts. Thickneases of 1/4 and 9/e inch are be- coming more common, both for special and genera] use in the United Statea• In other countries where alternate thin materials are not available, thicknesses of leas than 1/s inch are produced. The two uses for particleboard thst are major in terms of volume are furniture and cabinet care and floor underlayment (fig. 21- 8). As corestock, particleboard has moved into a market formerly held by lumF ? erp,, to a limited extent, P13'w'?• ? now per- certain grades of hardwood plyw mit the use of particleboard aa the core PlY where formerly lumber core was apecifled. f ?t-formed (pla-ten.preased) wood pw'tiale- ical roperties h d p an mec Table 214.-Strenpth ¢n ard b - Value 4or Value for Value for dium-denaity high-deneity PropertY low-denaity particleboard me perticleboard particleboard Unit Density ------------------ ' 26-37 '0.40-0.69 37-50 0.59-0.80 60-70 ? 0.80-1.12 00 P.c.f. e.i. 000 p 1 iflc 8ravity : -: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -' MS Mulue of elaeticity (bending) .. _. . . . _ _ . . - -- -- ' 160-260 400 1g00-1 260-700 600--51000 1 360-3,0 2,400-7,500 . , P.e.i. Watertown, SD 57201 LABORATORY No. 7-11393 INTRODUCTION: At the request of Larry L Hoover, we have conducted tests on a sample sandwich panel and on the adhesive used to bond the panel materials. The tests were conducted to measure the ten- sile strength of the panel in the flatwise plane and the shear strength of the adhesive bonds. The sample sandwich panel and the adhesive were provided to our laboratory by Enercept, Inc. The tests were conducted in accordance wtih ASTM:C297 and ASTM:U905. SUMMARY OF RESULTS: Tensile Strength of Pane1, psi 25.8 (Flatwise Plane) Shear Strength of Adhesive Bond, psi 284 TEST METHODS: The tensile strength of the panel was determined in accordance with ASTM:C297, "Standard Method of Tension Test of Flat Sandwich Constructions in Flatwise Plane." Five specimens, 2" square, were cut from the sandwich panel and tested using a test speed of 0.3 ipm. The loading fixtures were glued to the wood facing on each end of the test specimens. The shear strength of the adhesive bond was determined in accordance with ASTM:D905, "Standard Test Method For Strength Properties of Adhesive Bonds in Shear by Compression Loading." four sets of maple blocks 3/4" by 2 1/2" by 12" were provided to Enercept, Inc and were bonded using the panel adhesive and their standard application methods. The blocks were returned to our labora-tory, conditioned, and cut into test specimens. The specimens were tested using a crosshead speed of 0.015 ipm. •S 4 YYTYAL MOTlC110N TO Cll[NTS. LINTEL -TESTS • ' Procedure Three, 6,5" wide by 13.75" deep, box beam window lintels WigurUs 4 and 5) were tested for their ability to support bendings loads similar to that caused by dead and snow loads. The lintels consist of 1/2 in. Blandex skins attd Aem-Fir fi12, 2x6 lumber members with 2 2x6's at the top of the beam and one at the bottom. The skins are nailed in place with 8d nails approximately 6 in o.c. and the core of the beam is filled with polystyrene. All three lintels were tested in the South Dakota State University, Agricultural Engineering Department Structural test unit (hereafter referred to as the Structural. tcst unit). Loads were hydraulically applied at two-foot intervals along the top of the lintels, were maintained for 5-minutes and the mid-point deflection of the lintel was measured with a transit and scale calibrated to the nearest hundredth of an inch. Loading and lintel support arrangements are illustrated at the bottom of Table 2. 'Cwo of the lintels werc tested with n.9-foot spnn and one wnx teKted with u 12-fc>oL spcin. Results The lintel test data are presented in Tables 2,3 and 4, and the load-deflection curves tar the three lintels are presented in Figure 6. The uniform roof load was based on the portion of roof area supported by the .lintel. Since the roof panel is supported at the peak and at the eave, the roaf load supported 6y the lintel is equal to the lintel span multiplied 6y one-half of the horizontal distance from the peak to the lower end of the roof (9 ft x 7.6 ft or 68.4 ft2 for the 9-ft span and 12 ft x 7.6 ft or 91.2 ft2 for the 12-foot span). Based on an allowable sz,s deflection of span in inchesJ240 the allowable lintel loads were ft and 31 lh/ftz for the 9-ft lintel span and 33 lb/ft2 for the 12-f00t span. These loads do not include the dead load of the lintel. Lintel failures were noted at uniform roof loads of 156.8 and 134.3 lb/ft2 for the 9-ft spans and at 80.4 lb/ftZ at the 12-ft span. *The hydraulic pressure/load relationships have been developed for the Structural test unit as per ASTM Standards. 4.? File R11482 Page T1-3 Issued: 9-27-85 TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT: Thermocouples were used to monitor temperature in the room during the test at locations shown in ILL. 2. The four thermocouples directly above the iqnition source were No. 14 qauge (0.063 in. diameter), Type K(chromel-alumel) thermocouples. The leads of the thermocouples were mounted in ceramic insulators within 1/2 in. diameter black iron pipe, with the bare junction protruding 1 in, beyond the end of the ceramic insulators and 3 in. beyond the end of the iron pipe. The remaining thermocouples used to measure temperatures at various locations in the room geometry were No. 29 gauge (0.011 in. diameter), Type K(chromel-alumel) thermocouples in irconel shields. SUPPLEMENTAL SMOKE MEASUREMENT: Smoke measurements were taken during the conduct of the room test by utilizing two photometers consisting of a light source and a photocell. Smoke passing between the light source and photocell at each location caused reduction in the light intensity received by the photocell. The photocells were connected to a recording potentiometer (millivoltmeter) and the changes in electrical output of each photocell were recorded. Calibration of the photometers was accomplished by a series of neutral density calibration filters. Photometer locations are shown in ILL. 5. IGNITION SOURCE: A nominal 30 lb wood crib was used as the ignition source. The crib was constructed using SPF lumber sticks, nominally 2 by 2 in. (1-1/2 by 1-5/8 in. actual), each 15 in. long. The cribs were constructed with ten tiers, with five sticks in each tier, and placed into a curing cell at 120°F at 20 percent relative humidity until constant weight was achieved. Immediately prior to test, the crib weight was adjusted by the addition of dried sticks, to a final weight of 30 ± 1 lb. RSL/LJP:pr lbry File R11482 Page T1-4 Issued: 9-27-85 IGNITION PROCEDURE: To prepare for placement of the wood crib, four brick pieces, nominally 4 by 4 by 3 in., were placed to provide support of the crib and provide a nominal 3 in. space between the floor and the lower surface of the crib. One pound of shredded wood excelsior fully fluffed, was arranged among the bricks, with excelsior covering an area approximately 21 by 21 in. To initiate the test, the wood excelsior was wetted at the center with 4 oz of absolute ethyl alcohol and the crib was set in place on the bricks, at a horizontal distance of 1 in. from the surface '- of each intersecting wall. At the start of the test, a flaminq probe was applied at two locations in the dry excelsior. At ignition, flames progressed steadily through the dry excelsior, until the alcohol wetted portion was reached. At this point, flames flashed through the entire remaining excelsior providing uniform application of ignition flame beneath the entire crib. PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION: A series of 35 mm slides and a video tape recording were taken during the course of the test. RESULTS: Test Observations Flames from the ignition source reached the ceiling at 1 min, 30 s. Maximum flame extension at the wall-ceiling intersection reached 4 ft from the corner at 2 min, 45 s. The scent of charring waferboard was detected at 6 min, 30 s. Smoke did not mask observation of flame extension at any time during the test. Test terminated at 15 min. The complete record of observations is summarized in App. A. RSL/LJP:pr - ry ? File R11482 Page T1-5 Issued: 9-27-85 Temperatures The complete temperature profile within the room geometry during the fire test may be found in App. A of this Report. Smoke Measurements The optical density per foot at each location is tabulated in App. A. ? Post-Test Observations After the test, damage to the wallboard and sample panels was assessed. The wallboard and waferboard were removed to permit examination of the foamed plastic. The maximum extent of damage to the wallboard, waferboard and core material are shown in see ILLS. 6, 7 and 8. RSL/LJP:pr lbry File R11482 Page C1 Issued: 9-27-85 C 0 N C L U S I 0 N The following conclusions represent the judgement of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., based on the results of the examination and testing presented in this Report as related to established and previously recorded data. FLAME PROPAGATION AND DAMAGE PROPERTIES: 1. The observed surface burning did not extend to the extremities of the test sample nor did the flame project through ? the doorway opening at any time. 2. At the conclusion of the test, observations shall show that the combustive damage (that is, burning, charring and the like) of the test materials within the assembly diminishes at increasing distance from the immediate fire exposure area. FOLLOW-UP PROGRAM: The products are judged to be eligible for Classification and Follow-Up Service. The manufacturer is authorized to use the Laboratories' Classi£ication Marking on such products which comply with the Follow-Up Procedure and any other applicable requirements of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Only those products which properly bear the Laboratories' Classification Marking are considered as Classified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
