At the time of arrival, the house pad and oversize area and been excavated to remove undocumented fill approximately 6 to 7 feet in depth. Based an visual observations of the natural slope and estahlished trees and vegetation directly to the north of the pad, the excavation had extended to natural soils. Soil at the base of the excavation consisted of a Einm, plastic sandy loam below optimum moisture. Probes conducted at random across the axcavation indicated uniform consolidation of the base soils- A 4 foot handauger probe conducted near the northeast corner of the pad indicated subgrade soils consistent with base soils with no ground water migration observed. Fill depth to walkout footina elevation is estimated at 5 to 6 feet, with density testing to pe completed on a will call basis during fill plaeement. Reported stress was observed within a seeti,on of the walkout foundatian and a north/south interior wall. observations indicated 3J16 to 1/4 inch vertical cracks stapped through mortar joints and the concrete masonry units. We were advised that instrument readinqs indicate approximately 1/2 inch of settlement within the southeast foundation wail section. To evaluate soils at depth, a backhoe was utilized to excavate a test pit adjacent to a stepped out sectian of the walkout foundation wall which indieated stress. The walkout foundation consisted of 10 coarses of block at approximaiely 7 feet helow the existi.ng qround surfaae. Our obsarvations indicated a thin layer of snow and 2 to 3 inches of frast at the aase of the footings. The frozen soils were temoved with a pick, and hand auger probes conducted. The prabes indicated generally wel] consolidated soils below optimum moisture. To assesa the relative loadbearing capacity of the soils at d2pth, a dynamic cone penetrometer test was conducted at the base of the footing adjacent to the Eaundatian wall. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), uses a eight kilagram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conicai point into the soii, with the penetration recorded in millimeters per blou. The DCP was advanced a 1025 millimeters {40.4 inches} with a aomposite, par Ialow, penetratian average ot 25.9 MM recorded from the initial set hlow t? 488 MM (19.2 inches). From 599 MM to 707 MM (8.5 inch zane) penetration was recorded at 105 MM and 114 Mt4 £or the 2 blows• Penetratfon from 736 MM to 1025 (16.7 i'nches) indicated a penetration average of 16.7 MM. To further eva2uate soils beyond 40.4 inches, a extension was attached to the DCP and soils penetrated from 132 MM to 1058 MM Eor an additional 926 MM (36.5 itichas). From 132 MM to 430 MAi (11•7 03/28/2003 10:30 FAS 8905883 INSTANT 1'ESTING/ALLIED ?J008 - ? ? inch zone} a penetration average oE 19.8 MM was achieved, most likely the lower lift of compacted engineered fill. The underlying soils from 466 MM to 1058 MM (23.3 ineh zone), probably natural soils, indicating a average 39.4 MM penetration per blow. dur experience with the AcP in similar soils would indicate N-values ranging from N-3 to N-15, for the total 1951 MM (6.4 feefi) of soils penetrated. This N-value, is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blaws per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test.
