Ryan Mack, PE visited the above site in Eagan, Minnesota on 8-22-14 to assess the structural
adequacy of an LVL beam that had been installed during a renovation of the residence.
The following was observed on site: ',
A(2) 14" LVL beam had been installed over the top of an existing(3) 2x10 wood beam. The II
overall length of the LVL beam was approximately 16-feet and was supported by(3) 2x4 studs
at one end and (3) 2x6 studs about 1-foot in from the other end. These studs were installed
below the 2x10 beam but appeared to have solid contact points up to the LVL beam. This beam
supports a second story gable end wall and vaulted roof trusses that span approximately 18-
feet above the kitchen. Partial demolition had been performed in the floors below in order to
expose the wall cavities in the areas below the bearing studs supporting the LVL beam in the
main.
The following is our professional engineering opinion regarding the LVL beam condition:
The (2) 14" LVL beam in question is structurally adequate to support all tributary Code required
loading and the bearing studs noted above provide adequate support at each end. Equal
number and size studs are to be installed in each floor below and blocked through the floor
system as required in order to provide a direct load path down to the foundation at each end of
the beam.
