The purpose of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the soils encountered in the bottoms of the excavation for fill and house support. The purpose of the compaction testing was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the engineered fill placed for house support. AvailaU)e Information No soil borings were performed for the proposed house. Previous grading had been performed on this lot. It appears the proposed house is off the graded house pad on the north/northeast side (below the garaee). There was no documentation provided to us regarding the previous grading. This report only addresses the soil correction where the proposed house went off the graded house pad. At the time of our observations, we were provided with a Certificate of Survey prepared by Tri- Land Company, dated April 1, 2002. House offset stakes were set in the field by Friedges Lxcavating, Inc. (Friedges). Braun Intertec excavation oversizing measurements, bottom of excavation elevations and compaction test locations and elevations were referenced to these stakes. The exact house pad location is the responsibility of others. Proposed Construction The proposed house will be a two-story, full basement walkout type with an attached triple garage. Finish basement floor will be at elevation 914.3 feet and garage floor at 923.3 feet. It should be noted that the footings in the garage area were lowered to the same elevation as the basement footings (about 913 1/2). We assume the house will be supported by conventional spread footings designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure not exceeding 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf). Excavation Observations Bwun InMrtec Corpowtion 6950 Wesf 146th Slreet, Suite 131 Apple Valley, Minnesola 55124-8520 952-431-4493 Fax: 952,431-3084 Enginaers and Scientists Serving the Bvilt and Natural Environments° Project BODX-02-041C The excavation observations were conducted by a senior engineering assistant on April 5, 2001. The excavation observations consisted of observing the soils exposed in the bottom and sidewalls Friedges Excavating, Inc. Project BODX-02-041C April 16, 2002 Page 2 of the excavation. The approximate density or consistency of the soils encountered was estimated by judging the force required to advance random, shallow (about 1 to 3 feet deep) hand auger probes. Soi] classifications were determined in the field by examining the hand auger probe cuttings in general accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures. When we arrived on site, the excavating contractor (Friedges) had removed approximately 7 to 9 feet of unsuitable soils from below the garage and oversizing areas at the north end of the house. The bottom of the excavation ranged from approximate elevation 906 at the rear of the garage (north) to 911 at the front of the garage (east). The soils encountered in the bottom of the excavation primarily consisted of lean clay that was judged to be in a medium to rather stiff condition. The approximate dimensions of the soil correction at the north end of the house pad area was about 20 to 30 feet (north to south) by 60 feet (east to west). Based on the construction staking provided by Friedges, the excavarion was oversized about 8 to 10 feet beyond the wall lines. See the attached sketch which shows the proposed house location, the approximate area of the previously graded pad, excavation limits of these soil corrections and bottom of excavation elevations. Fill and Compaction Tests The soils used as engineered fill for house support consisted of either poorly graded sand with silt or silty sand. The engineered fill was placed in about 1-foot lifts with a skid loader, then compacted with a self-propelled, vibratory, sheepsfoot rol]er. A total of 4 compaction tests were performed in the engineered fill placed for house support. All of the compaction tests met or exceeded the minimum density requirement of 95 percent of standard Proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D 698). Compacrion tests were taken at about 2-foot intervals up to footing subgrade elevation of about 913 1/2 in the garage area. The compaction tests and Proctor curves are attached to this report. Conclusions Based on the results of our excavation observations and hand auger probes, it is our opinion the soils encountered at the excavation bottom in the area of the soil correction at the north/northeast portion of the house pad are suitable for fill and house support. Based on the construction staking provided by others it appears the excavation of the north/northeast portion of the house pas was adequately oversized. Based on our compaction test results, it appears the engineered fill tested (to about elevation 913) was adequately compacted for house support. General Remarks It should be noted that standard penetration test borings with power equipment were not taken to evaluate the soils at depth. However, the soils which were visible and the results of the hand auger probes indicate that the risk of deh-imental settlement due to poor soils at depth is very small and Friedges Excavating, Inc. Project BODX-02-041C April 16, 2002 Page 3 we, thus, recommend that it be assumed by the owner. The cost for taking soil borings to better define that risk does not appear warranted. Services performed by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that level of care and sldll ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this area. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made.
